341 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Dec 8 1887 Maynard's Plat read & granted. Communication from J J McGilvera in regard to Madison Street grade read & referred to the city Atty. Petition of O J Carr & others for street lights on West Street from Virginia Street to Vine Street read and granted; said lights to be of 16 candle power & placed on wooden posts. Petition of Frederick Prosch for a cross walk on Fourth Street at the corner of Virginia Street read & referred to the Street Committee. Petition of A G Murray for permission to build on addition to his oyster stand on South Second Street read and granted. Petition of Thomas Burke & others for grading alley in Block 9 Boren & Denny's Addition read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of Henry Adams to have assessment corrected, read & referred to the City Atty, and returned by said Atty with the recommendation that it be rejected. Adopted. Petition of N L Rodgers & others for opening Leonora Street from Front Street to Fourth Street and that the bluff on the bank on the East side of Front Street on said Seneca Street so sloped enough to prevent land slides onto Front Street sidewalk, read and referred to the Street Committee. Petition of L M Robbins & others asking for appointment of J L McClellan to a Police Captaincy read and tabled.

359 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Dec 13 1887 Also, "An ordinance to provide for the assessment and collecting of harbor dues from vessels and water craft arriving at and departing from the City of Seattle and fixing the amount of such harbor dues." Read and referred to same committee. Ordered that the Council do adjourn until tomorrow morning, Saturday the 17th, at seven (7) oclock. Attest Clerk Approved Acting Mayor Dec 17 1887 Be it remembered that on this 17th day of December AD 1887 the Common Council of the City of Seattle met persuant to adjournment. Present Acting Mayor Furth Councilmen Lake, Moran, Niesz, Russell and Reitze and W R Forrest, clerk. Petition of Thomas Burke for permission to move two buildings from Lot 7 in Blk 9 corner of Second and Marion across Second street to lot 4 Blk 10. Granted. The committee which was appointed to examine and report upon the Mill street Crib report as follows. "That we have examined the said work and plans and specifications and the contract and find that the walls have not the amount of batter (Namely 1 1/2" at the foot) as called for by the specifications, which we think a very great defect in the work and would recommend that a one and one quarter (1 1/4) inch iron bolt be put in said bulk heads extending entirely across the street secured by nuts on both ends said rods to be placed every 20 ft apart the work to be done under the direction of the street committee and to their satisfaction. Both to pass through bulk head and 12" by 12" perpen-

566 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Aug 15 1888 Be it remembered that on this 15th day of Aug AD 1888 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to adjournment. The following Officers are present towit:- His Honor the Mayor Robt Moran and Councilmen Burns, Durie, Green, Jones, McDonald Niesz& Reitze Absent McCombs the council now proceeds to examine and equalize the assessment Roll of the year 1888 and to hear and determine objections thereto whereupon the following changes are ordered made. Ordered that Thomas Burke be reduced of personal property (mortgages) $64,270.00 Ordered that the assessment of lands lying between the meander and high tide line lands be referred to a committee of three consisting of U R Niesz, C F Reitze & D E Durie Ordered that C F Rietze be reduced on N1/2 of Lots 5 block 4 Terry's 5th Addn from $450 to $250 said 1/2 lot having been erroneously assessed as a full lot. Ordered that D E Durie be reduced on improvement on Lot 6 Block 1 Yesler's 1st Addn from $1500 to $1000. Ordered that John Sullivan becited to appear & show cause wht the valuationof Lots 4 & 5 B 5 C D Borens Addn should not be raised from $1800 each to $18,000 each. Ordered that A A Denny be reduced on unplatted land from 83.65 acres to 77 acres and the valuation of said land from $103,750 to $95,490.
