1857 Oct 3rd Raining nearly all day firing Tobacco old prize Barn & steeming the one at Crews. Fanning out wheat etc etc etc-

4th went to Strait Stone & Nannie to her Mamas

5- I went to Riceville got no money finished worming & succoring Tobacco & put up 2 scaffolds at new ground that fell down Cutting all on Johns Branch to day- & Cutt in Lot 370 Sticks to day firing 2 Houses & finished old prize Barn & now firing at Crews

6. finished cutting in Lot all thats ripe & then cutting all thats at fresh ground next to Crews,- fine weather at this time,

1857 (Turn back 2 leaves)

Novr 7 My wife & Jerry gone to Fannies, choped round stumps where wheat seeded Sandy plowing

-8th To day & last I am at home by myself cloudy & like for rain warm damp weather

9th Long warm cloudy damp spell but has not rained much lately, firing Tobacco this morning, then shrubing corn field, Sandy Plowing for wheat between 2 Branches in fresh field,- Fed cutting out Shoes, etclet Crews have my cart & steers till 12 Oclock to hall up corn, abram is to work a day for the cart & steers ½ day— Nannie & Jerry got home about 12 Oclock

10th Plowing & Bushing in wheat, Halling up corn from stoney pint. Rained last night a fine shower, cleared off Cool We Hitched our oldest mule colt Jenny this morning to a Bush & she done very well

11th Sent to Mill 4 Bus corn meal & 2 Bushel wheat for flour Fed making Henrys shoes Balance shucking Corn & Plowing & sewing wheat to day - fine clear weather

1857 Novr 12th sewing wheat Gathering corn, fencing in Fodder stacks & Turned cattle in stoney pint

13th. Went to Compton Sale bot 2 Raw calf Hides Sent to Walthall to Tan, 1 wheel & a parcel of old Irons,- Sewing wheat & Gathering corn, finished Sewing wheat,fine weather about this time —

14th. - Gathering in corn to day, we are going to meeting, & Halling wood Sandy & claiborne choping around stumps where we sewed wheat etc - fine weather

15 I went to meeting at Strait Stone

16 Raining this morning Buck sick yesterday better to day - very cool Rain began to put away Greens & Rain stoped Mr. Wm G Hollins here with Books & Mr Bass Stayed all night too,- Mr Hollins Borrowed a saddle & went below strait Stone this morning & to Mr Millers

17th Shoemaking putting away Greens covered Turnips took down some primings etc fine day —

18th Shoemaking & Halling up corn fine day.

19th Pulling & Halling up Corn, & shoema= =king to day moderate weather. — At 12 Oclock it began to Rain & then snow & Rain wind blowed very hard nearly all day or untill late in evening when it stoped & cleared off & the sun I think will set fair quite Pleasant in Morning & before 12 quite cold Shelling corn & shoemaking etc

20th Really a winters morning shucking Corn halled up 2 Loads, more making 76 Loads cart & waggon & 9 with Cart, clear day Shoemaking & about to finish nearly —

1858 March 6th Henry Halling wood balance malling etc alsePiling wood, put 3 of that Sows Pigs at stoney pint in pen she has 6 now I went to Mrs Hunts In the evening it began to snow & continued till about dark & then stoped only 1 or Two Inches Deep, Getting Ice at Yates Millers etc

7th very cold this morning cleared of[f] Jacob swaped Horses with Mr Hackworth, Henry Clay gone, give $24 on the 1st july next -, so we go Thermometer down to 10- this morning at Sun rise, - Jacob here,

8th Began to Snow Sometime in the night Wind N. E. Snow nearly shoe Deep this morning & Thermometer 28 this morning The Snow & wind is nearly as bad as 18th Jany 1857 only not so cold still snowing 9 Oclock hard wind N. E. cant do any thing but feed & make fires,- I have given My Overseer Nubbins & shattered corn3 times since he came here for his Cow & chickens This is really a winters morning Our Hogs gone again - -

9th Snowed about 1 Inch Deeper last night weather moderated a little but still cloudy Snow does not melt at all from 6 to 8 Inches Deep generally, cleaned out Granary done some shoemending & but little else yesterday to day Chumbly [damage] store, we expect to Hunt Hogs [damage] shop [hilve?] Hoes etc etc to day

1858 March 19th. Fencing new ground by Chumblys & Halling leaves on Irish Potatoe Patch, Began to Sew Oats to day - at mountain like for Rain

20th Fencing at Mount Spring new ground &Fine day John Shields buried at Mr Neals Sewing Oats on Mountain field -

21st Fine day John Shields buried at Mr Neals Rained Saturday night & Sunday morning Jordan helped Dig grave at Mr Neals

22nd Shrubing & pilling Rails at Overseers Jordan & Buck Halling Rails around Corn field & finished halling around Granary lot & at yard fence etc - cloudy & like for Rain Sewing Oats at mountain field & trying to finish there then evening, If possible

23rd Rolled Logs up at overseers House & finished about 10 or 11 Oclock, Rained last night, burning up Logs Trash, etc, & Sewing Oats & finishing at mountain field about 1 Oclock to day - 12 Bushels Sewed there,- Milly cow bot at Mrs Smiths Sale had a Bull Heifer calf last night,Cloudy & like for falling weather to day Jordan halling a few more Rails about Spring & at new fence Joining mountain field this evening.- balance attending to Log heaps etc at overseers House this evening —

24th Piling wood & Halling out Rails at mountain Spring. Sewing Oats at stoney pint. I went to Jacobs. they are Sewing Oats & Hilling there Fine weather about this time,–

25. Covered & manured Plant Beds above house Piling Rails & wood at Do fencing out there & finished it to day sewing oats at stoney pint Put up Bars at new ground to day

26th Begun to colter at overseers Piling wood & Rails in new ground to day.

27th march. Finishing sewing Oats at stony pint & will finish there to day overseer getting Rafters for Corn shelling Room to be put to Corn houseHous shortly Jordan Coltering at Crews Piling wood & Rails finishing new ground fence Joining the mountain field to day Sewing Oats at Crews, LetBig Henry have 12 lbs Bacon this 27th day of March for 1 month, Jacob has been down after Blade fodder & Bacon & Caddles [Candles?] Mr EG Lewis cut spayed & marked 14th shoats this day & Turned out a Black one for a thats with PigSow Beautiful weather about this time –

28th Nannie & me & children went to Cedar Hill & Mr Jno D Hunts to day fine day —

29th Sewing Oats at Crews, Fencing around granary Lot this morning & then at new ground Piling wood & Rails, Jordan carried Black Boar to mountain springs woods Pasture with Hunt Sow etc, - & then Halled up one stack blade Fodder this morning - a little cooler this morning Jordan coltering crossing to Hill at overseers Malissa had a Boy Child this morning after sun Rise, Sent for Doct Thompson but the Boy did not get him,- Mrs Neal here Sent to Mill with Cart 3 Turns Corn all for us tho one is for overseer, but he will take one of ours ground at Mill & whats in his Bag will be ours Send also 2½ Bushels wheat for overseer, All to Yates Mill

30th Rolled Logs to day Did not get done

31st Rolled again to day & expect to finish

April 1st Finished rolling Logs this have Rolled in all nearly 3 daysmorning &
