1854 aprl 26 Planted Snaps from Mrs Hunts in fresh field first this Side first Ditch Same Side next is speckled from Mr Lewis on the other Side first is some from Mrs Hunts towards Bars at at new ground planted Mr Lewis White Sort next to Mr Neals between Ditches, planted Rice Berry this evening & went to mountain field & began to plant & it rained, & we come home before night, Fed halling wood this morning the 28th Henry harrowing Sandy laying balance of planting at mountain field — Several of my Hogs died from spaying I reckon

29 Rained stoped us & we went to Striping Tobacco this evening & keep on Saturday the 29th & Finished Saturday evening at night, Corn coming up very well - -

31 Very cool this morning & yesterday —

May 1st A little frost this morning clear & cool We are picking our plant Bed above House halling wood laying off & Beding Garden Harrowing mountain for corn etc etc etc ——— Finished planting corn this evening

2nd Beding Cotton & Potatoe ground Collering & Hilling in new ground clear & cool

3. Halling Rails to fence in cotton Patch etc

4 Halling Rails etc Hilling in new ground trying to finish collering to day, quite cool altered by calf myself 2 days ago

5 May My Nannie Set 2 Turkey Hens Finished Hilling new ground Halling Rails & Henry & Sandy Coltering 3rd years ground -

6. Planted Peas Cotton & Corn on Branch in fresh making Cotton Patch finer & upset Lot fence Henry Carried his Tar to Mr John Hunts clear fine weather at this time - 7 Lambs this morning is all we have Our Tobacco Plants in 2 Beds very good flies eat up the mountain Bed.

24th March 1856 Given Fed Henry Jordan & Sandy some flour this morning — Went to Mrs Hunts & meeting House yesterday Striped tobacco all day Saturday not Rolled Logs yet nor finished sewing Oats – My wife went to Mrs Hunts yesterday,very windy to day. I went to Mr John D Hunts to day

25 March Rolled Our Logs & sent to Yates Mill 3 Bags Corn for meal carried 1 Log for Garden Paling & brot home 2 Bags meal & Garden Palings – windy day & moderate

26 Beautiful morning Halled up stack Oats to sew Sandy & Lowry Plowing in Oats Fed & Claiborne malling Balance fencing where wind blew it down yesterday, - let Mr Mr Lewis have 1 Bushel Oats Sallie started to school this 16th March 1856

27 Finished sewing Oats Sewed about 55 Bushels

28th Sewed flax Patch Plowing for Corn - Halling leaves out of new ground on Land Corn Began to Colter in fresh ground, Swingled flax this morning,- Clary Had a Heifer calfvery windy cool & dry weather yesterday we had a light fall of snow & very windy - all day Blowed down fencing again — we have only 4 Lambs to this day — —

29th Plowing for Corn Halling wood getting leaves for corn corn field etc Finished Raking new ground Coltering in Fresh ground fixing Barns there etc

30 Went to Mrs Moseleys Funeral Sermon Preached at Strait Stone Church by Elder Burton from Charlotte cty Va from 14 Chapter Revelations & 1 Verse Beautiful day little cool Hymns Sunday at her Funeral Virginia Selection 484th 476th 467th Hymns Solemn day -

31st cleaning up & Halling from Ground Henry shilings shingles Plowing for Corn My wife gone Mrs Hunts Beatifull day little cool & very [water stain]

April 1st Began to Hill to day Halling [water stain] Henry getting shingles sent Lowry [water stain]

9th Monday This Morning clear & cool quite a fine morning Halling wood & straw Malling in new ground & burning Brush Kitty & little Cutting all Logs etc etc Ground Cobbs & Corn this evening

10. Cutting old Logs Burning Brush malling made fire under Planks etc, Ground Hominey for Mrs Neal Lent Mr Crews horse to go to Mill, Fine weather this morning – Cool & windy Dr White here & I settled with him for Mr Neal & took in Bond & Saved Mr Neal of the $30 to pay it off $8.92 - -etc not compounding

11th Cutting old Logs in new ground Malling Pilling Brush Nannie & Jerry gone to Fannies Sewed Balance Plant Bed at new ground Burnt Soon after Christmas, - fine weather Henry firing Plank, he is complaining,

12th Pretty morning Sandy malling Henry sick. Jordan alse & Kitty halling leaves this morning Federick claiborne & all the others except Sandy fixing plant Bed on Road next to Mr Lewis s after awhile in morning - want to sew it to day & fence it in with Guano, Jerry card cutting house key away to Fannies,- etc — Sewed Plant Bed & trenched it, Guanoed want to fence & cover it in tomorrow. Sewed Cabbage seed & lettuce & mustard

13. Fencing & covering Plant Bed this morning Henry firing Plant. cloudy & like for Rain

Letter from Wm A Miller & marked on Hdd

This is what we have to pay for 1858 March 16 went to Riceville & got the Hhd of midling bot by Barber & Thompson & paid for 728 lbs & it weighed here exactly the same as it on Hdd including freight & Drayage Halled by T. W Anderson @

Halling ——— Fencing around Corn field fence & Planted Irish Potatoe Patch & Plowing this day Jerry started to school to Mr Boyd ineveningyesterday the 16th March 1858 - fine weather —

17th Treading out oats to sew to day Jordan & Buck halling Rails at new ground till 12 Oclock cleaning out tranches on Branch, & fencing on Cross fence in field & helping about Oats when wanted —

18th Jacob carrid 2423 Bus. Oats, we are Plowing Jordan Halling wood & Rails at overseers Fencing around Corn field

18th Sallie started to School to Miss Bettie Nunnelle at Mr Lewis,

19 Sold our Tag Tobacco to Thos W Anderson by Jno Singleton @ 5$ cash.

1858 april 12th Ground is as wet as I ever saw it allmost in my life

13th Rained nearly all night striping Tobacco to day, carried one Load of Lugs to Mr Andersons 1528 lb as pRecd. - Lowry striped to day & Jim & mule went to Carry Tobacco to Riceville

14th Plowing coltering shrubing in corn field & Hilling cleared off pretty day -- 18 Lambs to this day - all my shoats Mr Lewis altered welldone

15th Beautiful morning a little frost this morning Plowing for Corn, fencing this morning. Jordan Halling wood & Rails out of new by Crews & then Coltering Hilling up there, I am going to Cedar Hill this morning,- Halled out the last of Our wheat Straw this evening

16th Plowing for Corn Planted 3½ Rows Sweet Potatoes from Capt Fitzgeralds yesterday Jordan coltering Balance Hilling, little Henry gone to Mill for Chumbly Brot oneTurn back & left one there for him like for Rain — or snow

17th Plowing for Corn, next to Orchard Crossing next to Chumblys & Hilling Tobacco Hills,- Rained last night & likely for falling weather to day weather moderate, Halled out Our last wheat straws, Tobacco Plants size of a 4½d up & growing fast; cloudy weather at this time

18th went to meeting House about Sunday School, but few attended it Rained

19th Still cloudy I am starting for Court Plowing for Corn Burning Log Heaps Mr Hunts John came here to do up back etc

20th Burning Logs Plowing coltering & Hilling croping new ground cloudy all day Monday & Tuesday till evening I Did not get from court till Tuesday night
