1860 April 7. Hilling in new ground below oats Stacks,- clear pretty weather – I went to meeting to day

8th & 9 went went to meeting

10 Cloudy this morning —, Henry laying of[f] Fresh ground 1 way Harry Harrowing Beds for Corn, Hilling in new ground Planted Swet Potaote Patch ¬– I went down with Mrs Hunt to her place

11. Coltering & Hilling in new ground etc

12th Halling out manure put some in corn field Raked some I went to Milton wednesday & got back, Thursday ¬– fine weather —

13th. Began to Plant Corn this morning Finished planting corn in fresh ground & began in upper part of Lot in evening I went to Plantation this evening — The Two Sows at aspen Grove had only 2 pigs¬– our here is doing well Brought up young cow & calf from there this week & sent Slow & her Calf down there

14 I went to Chalk Level to attend to warrants vs Adams & Davis got Judgt vs Davis & had the Cost to pay & 1.26 I think in adams case for Mr Hunt.

15 went to meeting to Edgehill -

16 went to Court, Likely for Rain but did not Hilling Halling wood & coltering Sent Robin to Yates & got him shod ¬–

17. Bedding up Branch Land for corn Halling out Dirt from well fighting fire at Kelleys & McHaneys I Did not come home till to night windy nearly every day

18 Raining this morning, Cutting up may weeds in wheat shelling corn in morning.

24th Put out Our Second rate Tobacco Toping over & worming next to Whiteheads In evening Came up a tremendous hard rain wind & Gust washed away all fencing Blew down some for me took us till night to fix up again

25 Jerry & Henry Came home from Lynchg bringing 6 Bags Guano 1000 for aspen Grove sent the waggon on right off

26. Sunday Jerry went to association at upper Banister Carried the Letter from Strait Stone Church & $5 in money Doct Thompson came over to day Sunday to Mr Bybees children as he told me himself

27th Halled up Fodder & 1 stack Oats & then Henry went to mill & got flour from yates & gone down to aspen Grove to Load & start to Lynchg again with 2 Teams & all the Tobacco from there I Carrd Jerry to Chalk Level to live this morning for 12 months for $50Picked up & halled 1 Load apples, now Toping & worming Tobacco —

28 Started to Lynchg & carried Sallie on to School at Hollins Institute, worming & succoring Tobacco Rained very hard again Finished Carrying the Tobacco to Lynchg from Aspen Grove made only 5442 lb & sold for $290 & some Cents Expense in halling $16 & some cents overseer part $39.11. Settled with him for Tobacco & oats made 1859 & Oats made 1860 I Bot for moses, & he asked off & I took them myself I have paid for them &

29th Saturday Sept 1860 I Have been stilling nearly all this week for Bro Hunts Est. stilled into Low wines 11 Bbls Cider Finished Covering Barn for Tobacco to day & skined Cow, got up Broom Corn Sent Jerry^ ^ Smith to Chalk Level,-

30th Sent Wm A Millers acct to Mrs Coleman by Charles to day

Oct 1st Mrs Coleman came gave me $40 money to pay Saml Steptoe & Wm A Miller Firing Tobacco, on Road finished stilling Cider for Bro Hunts Est. this morning prizing Tobacco to day Turned out another Hdd & put under prize the Lug Hdd chinked Barn, etc etc. Finished worming & succoring over Tobacco Gave My Daughter Kate 4 Ewe Lambs & a stack Blade fodder to Mr Moses last spring to feed with

2nd Oct. Stilling myself, Mrs Hunt went to Doct Steptoes & come back at night prizing old Tobacco cutting to day in near new ground all day - moderate weather finishing new Barn

3 Hilling & finished to day by Dinner made 42 Gallons, toll & stilling to come out for Bro Hunts Est — Cutting Tobacco Bob at work here to day cloudy Sent all the Cotton over to old place that belongs there oil & molasses

4 Prizing & Finished prizing to day Rained nearly all day

5. Daubing new Barn & Cut over Tobacco have Cut about 2000 sticks getting up apples & Beeting Mrs Fitzgerald 2 hands come at night to help

6th Oct getting up apples & Beeting Mrs FW 2 hands here to day hot 4-Bbls

7th likely for rain stayed at home -

8th Housed Tobacco in prize Barn 1st Cutting down below Barn did not quite fill it Halled up stumps Poles Rails etc for fodder stack fram[e] put in forks etc — — — I went to aspen Grove found slow sick give her a ps meat found negroes doing not much, & Cothran gone — Rained to day about 12 oclock - -

9th Stacked Tops got them all together before Breakfast Henry & his gang - Turned Cooler I went to old place to see about sale Nannie & Mrs Hunt went too — — I gave Mrs Hunt 50 for Bob to day to help me stack Tops as he talked of going to Mrs Coleman — Finished Tops Firing prize Barn Tobacco have cut near 2000 sticks here Turned cool to day — We have 11 or 12 Stacks fodder here 14 stacks Oats ½ stack old fodder yet 19th Stacks fodder & 16 stacks Oats at Plantation & at this time 6 Barns Tobacco full there & they are finishing cutting —

10th Cutting Tobacco & Piling to day Henry got another Barrel Cider last night fine weather Mrs Hunt & Bob gone to Mrs Colemans to day, Nannie & myself went to Chalk Level & Lent John shields 5 long Bags & 3 short Bags to carry wheat to Lynchg - clear weather returned 4 short & 3 long Bags — 1 missing & too many short ones sent me

22nd Finished shucking corn what we had up, etc

23 Let Mr Burroughs have my hides again. he got six hides one Rat Eaten his Rect only for 5. error, I Know he got six because we lost 3, 2 milch cows & my Bull & Killed 3 Beefs. this I know Housing corn & stacks, Raining this morning a little, — we finished Housing corn all that halled up, & done all but Peach Orchard. Henry making loft to stable, put Plank in Corn House & Granary.

24th Cleared off very cold & windy last night to day cutting & malling wood & Halling fixed stable Loft, etc, I went to Mrs Colemans Mrs Hunt & Bob here, nearly every day this week, give out shoes to negroes

25. went to meeting at Strait Stone cold day not many persons

26th Halled up our Corn & finished shucking & Housing - this evening & Halled up stalks from fresh ground & sewed wheat looks very like for falling weather, my Boar spotted that was at JD Hunts plantation is now gone from there & I dont know where he is - I told Bob to get some Corn & fodder there to feed his Horses as Mr Bybee is complaining & I found him in Bed,

27 Shucking corn finished, Halled wood & Cut this day all day nearly

28th Raining nearly all day & we are striping Tobacco in Barn on Road -

29. Sent Smith to Chalk Level, Henry gone to Faris Mill 8 Bushels wheat & 1 Log to be sawed into sheeting & to get flooring Plank Bot at Colo Dickinsons sale
