11th I went down to Plantation monday Henry went to Millers Mill got all my plank there, we have one Log at Yates

12th Began to Plow finished stilling only made last time about 15 Galls Sent Bob to Yates to get my Buggy mended Cutting Pines etc in old field to day – 3½ Gallons Brandy in runlet for FWF Cider Turned out very little - apples rotten The mare I Bot for Mr Hunts Est Died sometime the 1st of the fall

13 I went to Chalk Level to see Capt Tate but did not see him, got Blankets etc for myself & Est JD Hunt Due Henry went after waggon to move Mr Doss Plowing here rounding & Jointing Shingles Cutting down Pines Bob gone to Hubbards after corn for Rent

14 Gave Out negroes Blankets LittleBig Henry Smith claiborne & Clementina Milly Ann hadRhoda had one too one in house here, Malissa Abram & Kitty at Plantation aspen Grove Little Henry Had a Hat, here & Lowry & Sandy at Plantation cold sure enough to night

15th. Snowed last night & till after 12 Oclock to day nearly ½ leg deep Sent Henry & claiborne after my Pigs got some of them Capt Tate & Jerry come here to day & Jerry went to Mrs Worshams to get his coat cut & made Bybee come to see about Plank Jerry staid all night still very cold & cloudy

16 at home all day cold snow near one foot Deep melted but little

17th. getting wood Bob has not been here more than one day in 10 days. halling

1860 Decr 23rd I went to Strait Stone Prayer Meeting very white or Black met, day very good for time of the year

24th Cutting wood for Plant Bed, Halling fire wood in the evening & Halled up 1 stack fodder to use in stable & 1 Load Shucks,

25th Snowed a little last night, alice sick with sore throat, went to old place give some Lard for them there & sent them a dram & this morning gave them some cider & got some for Mrs Hunt, etc etc fine day —

26th I went to Mrs Colemans to see Alice pd Mrs Coleman Balance of money got from CH. for her went to Welden Holders. Mr Hubbards & Mrs Hunts Place did not rent it to Waller, me & Mr Hubbard viewed the Land of Mrs Hunts he wants to buy some 40. or 50 acres which I agreed he might have at $12 pr acre - then I came home fine day

27 - went to chalk Level to hiring - cold day & fair —

28. went to Mount Airy no hiring cold fair day —— Mr Chumney my Overseer moved here to day Henry move him & I am to give him 3/-

29th. Halling Leaves Cutting & malled at Plant Bed, - to burn. it & at 12 Oclock we will get wood Hired Danl R Hunts boy John to Holder again $27½ for next year, Snowing again to night. Rented to Susan Roark the place where Roby lived this year of JD Hunts Est. for $15.00for 1861

30 Snowed last night a little & to day snowed & Rained nearly all day in fact raining allthe time

31st Snowed in the night & snowing yet 9 or 10 Oclock Snow about 4 or 5 Inches Deep —

Janry 10th Sent Jerry Smith to Chalk Level. Mr Chumney gone to Plantation to make alse coffin & see about her, my wife going to Mrs Colemans to see Mattie who is sick we hear Our folks are cutting & malling wood Henry is Barking ribs this morning & then to cutting wood still cloudy & like for Rain, I am going to Mr Hunts place to sell Bed, bot by allen, & he fail[e]d to comply with turns of sale & then I want to go to aspen Grove to see about burying alse this morning she was buried Mr Chumney made coffin

11th Mrs Hargrave here last night & went homethis morning Raising cider house to day clem spining

12th. Mr Chumney looking for white sow this morning, cutting & malling & Halling wood to day cleaning of [f] Plant Beds to Burn, Halled up one Stack Oats yesterday I am going to meeting to day

13. went to meeting House to meeting

14th Hired Fannie & Johnson Fannie to Fannie W Fitzgerald for Valuals & clothes Johnson to Joseph M Moses on same terms all went from here yesterday evening This morning Hailing raining & freezing at night nearly still raining & freezing Bob & Henry making Brooms & claiborne Little Henry at work on Basket Smith picking Cotton Clem spining overseer made [ing] Blades & whitted saw - dolefull weather -

15 no better Rained all night & to day Our Dining room is nearly wet all over water standing fixed it to day shelled Corn & striped Tobacco in prize Barn, sent Jerry Smith|Smith]] to Mill,-

16th Rained nearly all night again, shelling & this morning still cloudy & like for Rain, cleared off

1861 Feby 21st [Bought] of Mr Geo. Pannill 59 acres of Land including Low grounds on Creek, to be paid for as viz For the 59. acres $750. ½ to be paid in 12 mos. & the other ½ If not paid to Carry Int. from 22nd Mar. 1862 till paid, Mr Waller (Hampton) to make a Deed in fee for it when money pd. to Mr P, paid 22nd Feby 1861 on said contract $1.00 pRect

22nd Fix water gates on Creek Land bought of Mr. Pannill Plowing Cutting to day - Drawed of Cider 5 Bbls. at Mr Hunts place

22nd.23 Sent to Chalk after Papers & letters & to mill

24Plowing & in new ground till began to rain then striping Tobacco till night

24 went to Prayer meeting - cold day

25 been Hunting my Big white & spotted sow Cant find her, been missing 3 days fixed Cart body plows. raking in new ground Henry plowing for Corn balance in new ground cutting malling, Bob this evening digging holes to move bee House

26 Halled up 2 stacks to sew & thrashing out moved Bee House, planting I[rish] Potatoes by smoke House, Plowing Garden, Halled up stack fodder to day, Bled Ball sent to shop 1 Large dleaver to mend. plow Plate for new Plow 2 [St. ]Hoes to Lay & steel & steel to work 10 lbs I reckon - looks likely for Rain to - night

28. Cutting & malling, Halling Rails. Plowing – fine weather - about this time, –

March 1st Mr Barksdale here last night & we settled to this day, Cutting malling & Halling wood to day Claiborne gone to Mr Blanks to roll Logs, sent Charles to Aspen Grove carried Jordan & Abram ½ soles & Cap. for shoes & Coller & back band for Molley, Sent Smith to Chalk Level to -day Winding out Oats measured up 30½ Bus.

1413th March 1861. I have ^been to Charlotte Richmond & Louisa Lynchg & got back this day our folks has been working in new ground coltering on road, etc Just been to sew oats here this day my wife sent to [smudged] Mrs Cole

14th Sent Bob ^& claiborne to old place to Roll Logs Sewing Oats, fencing here to day — Raining a little Sewing Oats, burning Brush etc Fencing in early part of day

15th Sewing Oats & fencing, Nannie & me went up to Mr Moses to day & settled with them & Jacob P. about my trip to Louisa, etc - & they gave me my commission to buy me a horse altho I offered to give it to themetc I gave Mr Moses my horse Ball I got from Wm Shields; expect to Roll Logs at aspen grove tomorrow; very good weather

16h All hands but Smith & Charles went to aspen Grove to Roll, & I went too & it will push them to get done sent Phil to shop by Pal Smith went to Mill & Chalk Level, clem piling Brush & trash

17th Rained all day I staid at home Fannie W Fitzgerald here cool rain

18th cloudy & like for Rain, Halled up stack Fodder & Oats this morning - very cool 15 or 16 Lambs at Plantation, one stole last Friday night or day did not that is did not finishroll all the Logs. It began to snow a little about 10 or 11 Oclock & by 12 It Snowed very fast till late in the evening 3 or 4 Inches Deep & real winters day. We halled up 1 stack fodder & 1 stack Oats & began to Hall wood till evening then went to striping Tobacco it has been cold ever since Friday - work in new some this morning

19th Striping Tobacco to day halled up 1 Load dry wood, finished all the Tobacco we had down I went to Mr Hunts Place to have spring branch Ditched We have sent 2 hands to Mr Hunts place to Roll Logs 1 hand to Blanks’s 1 to Allen Scruggs 1 to whitehead & 5 to aspen Grove to roll this spring - snow till [faded] to day - & 1 to Jas Kelleys to Roll
