1848 June 15. began to Lay by corn with Plows yesterday on Hill by cotton Patch - Plowing fresh ground Tobacco this weather dry & cool night

16 - Spayed & altered 21 shoats yesterday Scattering manure in Lot & Plowing for Tobacco. Very dry & warm & ground hard, laying by corn up on the Branch above house, weeding Tobacco in big new ground — Lost 2 Turkey & young oneHens

18. Sunday like for Rain but did -

19. began to cut wheat to day - weed– =ing down Tobacco in little new ground not plowing much more till after harvest Mrs Hunt Sick & my wife gone there no Rain yet to do any corn

21 Weeding Tobacco & Laying by corn at home, several little showers Rain for a day or Two but not to do any good weather very dry — yet (12 oclock

22. Finished cutting wheat yesterday Last of stacks in Fresh ground over the drain next to Barn 111 or 112 stacks this way first cleaning 68 69 stacks in the old Land next to Mr Lewis’s in Johns field stacks - finished Lay by corn at home by 12 oclock.

1849 Jany 1st striping Tobacco in middle barn good striping day

2nd Striping in second & finished 9 O clock in night what we had down

3rd cloudy & like for Rain or snow Halling wood & burning little Plant Bed in new ground Brot Home berkshire yesterday & he is gonefound him in Pasture & hes not gone this morning

4th Shelled corn & carried 5 Bus corn to mill & 1 stack for Palingin we have 3 Large Logs at mill for Palings. Cutting in new ground big growth in little new ground — Sewed little Plant Bed in new ground this day weather fair & clear Halling up a stack Oats 2 days ago

5th Very cold clear & windy Cutting in new ground all hands

6 Halled out 1 stack wheat straw yesterday cutting in new ground big growth,went to Mr. Lewis to get him on Tuesday next to act as referee in Jas East Rent matter about Tobacco Lots & also E Fitzgerald very cold & windy this day

7 weather moderated cloudy & like for Rainsnowor

8 Still cloudy & like for snow, my wife & Lucy Ann clement went to Riceville yesterday 7 to get Lucy Anns tooth Extracted Cutting big growth in new ground Henry sick in house. cold

9th Ground covered with snow not very 5 or six snows to this time not deep cleared off in evening.

1849 Feby 26. Carried 1½ Bbls corn & 1 Large Log to Doct Miller Mill for HartPalings Sewed over 2 plant Beds at home little & big one -

27 Sent to Mr Lewis to Roll Logs. Cutting old Logs malling etc cloudy & like for falling weather - cold-

28. Taking down Tobacco in prize Barn this morning nearly done malling

March 1st. Broke off warm, first time the sun has shined for several days the moon is full & we have not yet seen it on account of cloudy & dry weather - Finished Our new ground Fence this morning halling wood & about winding up malling We have ⅔ our prize barn Tobacco strip yet =

2 Rolled Log this day did not get

3rd Burning Logs this day. Halled up stack Oats & straw paid Mr Yates for corn

4 still cloudy & cold quite damp all this whole week except one day had 14 in 14 Lambs only 7 alive to this day

5 Striping Tobacco – nearly done

6 Striping Tobacco prize barn still cloudy & like for rain or snow cloudy & damp nearly all Feby & March to this day, since Feby court I dont there has been 3 fair days

22. Planted about 7 or 8000 Tobacco Hill Planted Irish Potatoes seed to day Plowing Corn & weeding. Planted last square Greens

23 Replanted corn on Branch & weeding drill Corn. Planted Peas & Corn on Branch

24th weeding drill Corn, Plowing & Harrowing weather fine, cloudy & a little like for Rain nearly done Plowing ps cheek corn below house Cut Mrs Coleman colt. done by Bro. Wm Dews

25 Weeding corn below house Plowing & Harrowing weather cool, finished weeding ps below the House, & all drill corn nearly except branch

26th Raining this morning & last night & all day shoemending spining shelling corn etc. weather Cool & Rain from N. E.

27th cloudy & Rainy this morning, quite cool Put Lady Jane to Mr Collins Horse kept by Free Patrick I am to pay Five Dolls for a Colt. no Colt no pay, =

28 Thundered & lightened this morning Rained hard & raining nearly all day very wet time in deed. weather more warm — Planted 3 or 4000 Hills mon in big new ground Tobacco Hills last Saturday 27th Inst.

29th Planting & expect to finish all new ground to day - Cutting off & Planting -

30 My waggon started for Lynchg with Mr Lewis’s Tobacco 1 Hhd at $4 Fernage & tollage all pd, Planted our new ground Tobacco except a Bottom in it. Planted a little of our second yrs Land now Bushing Oats & wheat thining Corn etc very wet time & warm Thining corn & gone to mill this morning

31st May - Thundered cloud in night & rained very hard Brot from mill this week 3 Bbls meal

June 1st Finished Thining corn yesterday except some drill Corn in bottoms & on branch Planted Tomatoe Peach screan & Goards hill on to day replanting tobacco in new ground weeding Corn & shearing sheep fine Growing weather. ground very wet

2nd Ground very wet Rained last evening Henry returned from Lynchg for Mr Lewis last night in 3 days, - we are this morning spining making Bars. shoemaking & then for finishing shearing our sheep marking & cutting our Lambs & Planting Tobacco - done our new ground Hills except, 100 Hillsabout Planted little second years ground Plants are small

4th Plowing & weeding corn to day, weather warm & seasonable fine growing time

5. Plowing & weedingby middle Barn Corn Halling out manure on Tobacco Lot clear day Went to Mr Hodnetts & Mrs McCullocks

6 Finished last evening Plowing by middle barn Weeding there & Harrowing this morning Plowing fresh ground next to orchard. Covering potatoes & corn on Hill Halling out manure again to day cloudy — Sent Bit & calf to Mrs Colemans & 3 of hers is in my pasture

7 Planted fresh ground with plants from Bro Sampson, starting to fix lot & began to Rain & stop us sent for plants to Plant it

8 Beding & Planting Lot to day -wetground Finished planting all except 6 Or. 8000 on branch fine season clear fine weather —

9th Plowing & weeding corn, this day overnearlyonce

10. Rained this evening hard shower

11. Plowing corn over once weeding corn bybarn middle nearly done.
