1858 Jany 134th I went to Plantation Bybees for Mr John D Hunt. to Hillfield & to Mr shields & sent to Colo Smiths Plantation to see about Hiring a Cook for Jacob have not got her, Cutting & Halling wood Henry Riving boards & stop Ice pond on Road to day, looks very much like for falling weather –

15th Raining again this morning it has rained every few days ever since Christmas nearly the ground uncommonly wet Nannie & Jerry went to Mrs Hunt last evening, Striping Tobacco this morning -- Raining nearly all day did not quite finish the Tobacco in old prize Barn 7 Lambs to this day - Hunt Sow got Pigs 9 in number yellow sow has 6 the other Two 13 all look well

16 went to meeting House Henry & Jerry Smith gone to Jacobs to Hall wood leaves etc

17th Fannie W. & Cate came down 16th stayed at Home to day - Hunt Sow got 9 Pigs- cutting last Saturday ¬

18. Cutting wood to burn Plant Bed on Road Hitched Netty again worked by herself very well etc etc — —

19 Cutting in new ground & Halled wood 2 Plows Running - Halled up 1 stack fodder from mountain I go Riceville to settle my business with Anderson Clement & Doct Thompson

20th Burning Plant Bed on road I went Mr Kelleys Jacobs & mount airy to send letter to JDH

21st Finishing off Plant Bed on Road & Sewed & fenced & covered it to day - & then expect to work Hester to waggon - cloudy moderate weather

22nd working Netty to day Halling Rails around corn fieldcutting in new ground

23rd Halled out straw this morning Cutting Henry Halling wood to day Netty at work

4th February 1858 Begun to Rain about 10 Oclock last night & sometime in the night began to Snow Horses runaway coming back from Millers Mill yesterday& this morning Snow 6 or 8 Inches Deep has & we are striping Tobacco, & putting snow in ice House,= to day= Trees very full of snow & Roads stoped up, cloudy & like for rain all day

5th Snowed & Rained last night a little & cloudy this morning, Striping Tobacco at new prize Barn, one she[e]p Died last night

6th Part cutting wood Henry & Jordan Halling wood from mountain, fresh ground Halled wood at Chumblys & 1 Load of wood to Mr Neals Found part of our Hogs over on the mountain next to Mr Pringles, but could not get them home Clear day not very cold, Snow melted but little yet

Febry 9th cutting up by overseers House Henry Compl= =aining. Pal. Sick Doct Thompson came to see Pal Pal. has very Soar Throat, - my Hogs gone again Jacob got ½ lb Cotton for Kitty to spin,Cutting & trying to get done by overseers house cleared off this morning & windy & cool, we hope Pal is a little better, Halling wood,

-10th. Cutting & finished by overseers House Halling wood to day & halled out Straw - Turned cold in evening my hogs gone again found some of themto day -

11th. Malling at mountain Spring alse burning Brush, nannie gone to Mrs Hunt to night very cold this morning, 14 Lambs to this time Henry has been complaining for 3 days & in house

12th Began to Snow this morning Sent Jordan & Buck to hall 2 Loadswood for Miss Neals Shelling corn making Bro[o]ms etc etc not very cold — Wind N,E,- nannie come back in the Snow this morning & Horse threw her & Jerry at the gate flat on the ground & did not hurt [water stain] Snowing yet late in evening Corn shelter broke to day & took 2 or 3 hours [water stain] at 2 oclock in evening about 4 Inches

1858 March 2 went to Plowing after Dinner 2 Plows, Sent for Doct Thompson for Mr Hunts son Doran sick Jerry went,= Jacob stayed till near night. Carried Kate & Sallies shoes to make, etc a very cold windy weather —

3rd Weather cold & still this morning – I think the weather moderated, malling at new ground finishing burning brush, Henry halling wood this morning & a Load or Two for overseer little Henry gone to Mill for overseer to carry his corn & will get the meal when we send, Doct Thompson Came last evening to See Mr Hunts son Doran This day about 12 Oclock Henry house burnt up & every thing they had except what they all had on, dis= -covered first by jerry I run & Henry and Lila & Malissa but was in such a light blaze insided impossible to get any thing but one chair out how it caught nobody can tell, but I suppose accidental by Some of the children as the Beds seems to have caught first & then the floor over head was all in a blaze when I got there & seemed to have caught about the Beds, considerable loss as they saved nothing at all, weather was quite calm - -

4th Henry & Jerry & 2 or 3 of the little gang got 5 Loads & filled the Ice House & then halled leaves little Henry went to Mill carrd 2 Bushels corn for us & brought a Turn Card yesterday for overseer Malling at mountain Spring; Mr. Dallas here last The Ice about 2 Inches thick & very nice -

5th Malling & cleaning Out stables I am going to Riceville to day – Halled out Straw in evening 1 Load very cold & Poeple getting Ice in Several places My Hogs came up except one Black boar

6th Ground Cobbs & corn etc this morning weather moderated a little this morning

1858 March 26th Sewing Oats at stoney pint & nearly done, fine weather —

27th march. Finishing sewing Oats at stony pint & will finish there to day overseer getting Rafters for Corn shelling Room to be put to Corn houseHous shortly Jordan Coltering at Crews Piling wood & Rails finishing new ground fence Joining the mountain field to day Sewing Oats at Crews, LetBig Henry have 12 lbs Bacon this 27th day of March for 1 month, Jacob has been down after Blade fodder & Bacon & Caddles [Candles?] Mr EG Lewis cut spayed & marked 14th shoats this day & Turned out a Black one for a thats with PigSow Beautiful weather about this time –

28th Nannie & me & children went to Cedar Hill & Mr Jno D Hunts to day fine day —

29th Sewing Oats at Crews, Fencing around granary Lot this morning & then at new ground Piling wood & Rails, Jordan carried Black Boar to mountain springs woods Pasture with Hunt Sow etc, - & then Halled up one stack blade Fodder this morning - a little cooler this morning Jordan coltering crossing to Hill at overseers Malissa had a Boy Child this morning after sun Rise, Sent for Doct Thompson but the Boy did not get him,- Mrs Neal here Sent to Mill with Cart 3 Turns Corn all for us tho one is for overseer, but he will take one of ours ground at Mill & whats in his Bag will be ours Send also 2½ Bushels wheat for overseer, All to Yates Mill

30th Rolled Logs to day Did not get done

31st Rolled again to day & expect to finish

April 1st Finished rolling Logs this have Rolled in all nearly 3 daysmorning &

1859 March 3rd Sent to Mill for overseer Brought Turn meal for us left his there we Thrashed Out one stack Oats

4th Mr Roby quit on acct of no coal about 3 Oclock Halling leaves wood Claiborne malling Covered Potatoe Patch halled leaves in Big lot & Corn field, I went down to Yates Mr Lewis’s & aspen Grove, fine windy day My Boar gone Two or Three weeks –

5. Winding & Cleaning Oats to Sew. Henry laying off Corn Land claiborne beding Fencing etc etc Mr W Chumbly & Balance This day Swapted off Rose with Tom Owen for a Jenny named Jane & her Jenny Colt. Jenny about 4 yrs old little Colt about 4 or 5 months old,– jenny is a female donkey

6th. Beautiful day & all gone to Edge Hill to meeting but myself,- weather moderate

7th Jonathan Dawson came here very tight last night & stayed all night, very sick from it - This morning about light it commenced raining all morning till 12 then we were Shelling Corn & fixing plows & Harrow to Plank Corn, in evening pulled down & Halled old shop to burn etc etc etc Jacob left this evening with Mr Moses,

8 Nanny & Kate Sallie & negro Catham went to Doct Thompsons got some teeth drawn & wewere fixing overseers Garden etc till night

9th Finished overseers Truck Patch this morning Squared barn Logs & Plowing for Oats in big Lot fine weather

10th Plowing for Oats & fencing Began this morning to Sew Oats, Jacob commenced Plowing this morning. Here fine weather I went yesterday to Aspen Grove gave out
