Decr 17. 1860 Corn Oats etc gone to day after corn Mr Hubbards Milly had a cow calf last night all my Shoats up 2 Boars, gone Bot 236 lbs Pork of Allen Scruggs @ $8½ pr 100 lbs.

18th Went down to aspen Grove, to see Hester sick all day to day & left her sick, but I thought about night she was a little easier, made arrangements to Kill 11 Hogs down there, leave one, making arrangements to Kill 2 Here, & may be some I may buy tomorrow, Halled & Cut & Malled wood to day,- cloudy & like for falling weather, to night,-

19th. Killed our 2 Piggs here to day & Bot Two out of drove for us & Killed them, Henry went to mill this morning to Whiteheads carrd 1 Turn Corn 1 Turn wheat for negroes here & carried 1 Bus. wheat for Henry & Malissa, & 1 Bushel wheat for Ben promised him for faithful work with machine in fall when hired to me he has gone down to aspen grove to Kill 11 Hogs there & get overseer have his but since night it has set in to raining & we may not Kill there in morning Jerry came here this morning & let him have some sole leather for his shoes Hester has got well I heard this morning bot of Mr Williams my 2 hogs & 8 for Mr Hunts plantation,-

20th. I went to Plantation & fixed every thing there & 21st I went to CH.- Cut & Halled wood cleaned out Hog pen & in evening halled leaves

22 Returned from CH. Halling & cutting wood Bob here to day - -

" 2. Striping Tobacco in Barn on road. Miss Sarah J McCullock sent $2½ for whiskey bag & runlet & for me to send her a little sent a pint, by Taz.

3rd Striping Tobacco Henry draining Dining room, etc. Mrs Hargrave & Nannie Clement Came here last night, before I got from Riceville Mrs Hargrave hired Rhoda till 25th Decr 1861 for $25.00. Mrs Hargrave left. gone to Mrs C

4th Killed our Hogs here let Chumney have 300 lbs. Halled a little wood cut & malled wood some

5th Cut Out & salted up yesterday got wood to day Cutting & malled at new ground. I went aspen Grove to see about alse who is sick.

6 Fast day was kept by Nannie & me on the Friday the 4th Janry 1861 Fannie came here to day –

7 began to Plow & getting sills for cider house but Rain stoped us about 10 oclock going to strip Tobacco in new Barn stop raining & they went to work again in evening. did not rain much cleared off

8 Halling wood & finished getting sills for cider House & got wood balance of the — - I went down to Plantation to see alse etc she is better went from there to Mrs Hunts place rented her land to Templeton & Hubbard pr Bond etc. & then went down to D. W. Wallers. etc –

9th Rained again till towards evening I went to Whiteheads & to hunt my white sow, gone off a week - to day - & this evening halled up Logs for house, alse I hear is got worse this evening they sent for Doct Estes & me & she Died about the time Doct Estes got there, I dont know was the matter wither [with her] except colic - I reckon

Janry 10th Sent Jerry Smith to Chalk Level. Mr Chumney gone to Plantation to make alse coffin & see about her, my wife going to Mrs Colemans to see Mattie who is sick we hear Our folks are cutting & malling wood Henry is Barking ribs this morning & then to cutting wood still cloudy & like for Rain, I am going to Mr Hunts place to sell Bed, bot by allen, & he fail[e]d to comply with turns of sale & then I want to go to aspen Grove to see about burying alse this morning she was buried Mr Chumney made coffin

11th Mrs Hargrave here last night & went homethis morning Raising cider house to day clem spining

12th. Mr Chumney looking for white sow this morning, cutting & malling & Halling wood to day cleaning of [f] Plant Beds to Burn, Halled up one Stack Oats yesterday I am going to meeting to day

13. went to meeting House to meeting

14th Hired Fannie & Johnson Fannie to Fannie W Fitzgerald for Valuals & clothes Johnson to Joseph M Moses on same terms all went from here yesterday evening This morning Hailing raining & freezing at night nearly still raining & freezing Bob & Henry making Brooms & claiborne Little Henry at work on Basket Smith picking Cotton Clem spining overseer made [ing] Blades & whitted saw - dolefull weather -

15 no better Rained all night & to day Our Dining room is nearly wet all over water standing fixed it to day shelled Corn & striped Tobacco in prize Barn, sent Jerry Smith|Smith]] to Mill,-

16th Rained nearly all night again, shelling & this morning still cloudy & like for Rain, cleared off

1861 Janry 25. cloudy & likely for falling weather

" Janry 26th Rained & hailed last night & this mor =ning Turned cold & snowing & Hailing & about 8 Oclock in morning snowing hard. Finishing striping Tobacco what we have down this morning, & then Mr Chumney will cut me out a pr shoes, double for wet wheather, shelling corn making Brooms etc to day - dreadful weather all this year, & indeed wet all the fall Snowing fast about night & stoped about dark my old sow lost 3 pigs, awful weather, & Keeps snowing allmost every week, or raining, mended Dorans Shoe & Charles, to day, fixed spool frames

27th went to Strait Stone Prayer meeting only 3 there besides myself, Kelley L & Robt Yates

28th Cutting & malling in new ground on Hill next to wheat field, I went to Plantation met Pal coming after me, his mama sick, sent Jordan after Doct Thompson A.W. she has something like flux, cold in her bowls & hope nothing serious he gave her a Blue Pill with some opium in it & recommended oil in a day or Two & eat lite, snow dont melt but little, very disagreeable weather

29th I went to Plantation Malissa only tolerable Cutting malling & get some Logs for granary

30. Getting Logs for Granary I staid at home Lila sick. Sent for Mrs Coleman to see her

31st Covering Kitchen to day all hands, sent to Mill got my bag for overseer his sent is ours standingTurn Little Henry Sick, Malissa better & nearly well Lila not much the matter with her

Feby 1st 1861. covering Kitchen got along badly yesterday, looks likely for falling weather this morning began to Rain about 12 Halled stack fodder from Peach Orchard Henry

Halling wood, Claiborne Jointed some shingles Chumney & Jerry Smith at work on Kitchen Raining before night regularly – little Henry in House not much the matter tho taking Physic, I stayed at home all day

2nd Rained all night Raining this morning hard taking down tobacco in new prize Barn little Henry & his mammy in house Tobacco not hight enough to take down Just done to strip, did not get down any Rained all day Just about night,

3rd looked like clearing off sometimes to day toward evening cloudy & began to rain, & about 10 oclock in the night sunday began to snow sent for Doct AW Thompson for Betsy at JD Hunts place

4th. This morning snow about 3 Inches Deep not very cold, going to hang up Our meat to day – Doct A.W.T. staid all night This day is Election Day for members to convention at Richmond, Hung up 139 ps Bacon & 23 Joles, getting & halling wood, I went to Election & left my Bundle Papers, & sent Henry for them to night, Jerry I reckon took them out when he took out some apples & chestnuts. got my Papers Henry got back at 12 oclock

5. Cutting & hewing Granary work on Kitchen Halled up stack Oats & 1 stack fodder I went to Plantation in evening

6th. Finished shingling Kitchen & Granary Logs & Halled leaves all day nearly – Bob came this morning from CH

7th Bob gone to shop, fixing Kitchen this morning
