August

10: Moderate breeze N.W. to light South wind with thick damp fog these 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keepers showing visitors in the Tower. Had twenty-three visitors. Steamster??? [Teamster?] hauling wood to the station today.

11: Light South wind and calm with thick damp fog during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing visitors in the Tower. Had eleven visitors. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport.

12: Light South wind with damp weather first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm fair weather. Sea smooth. 1st asst went fishing. Keepers showing visitors in the Tower. Had thirty four visitors today.

13: Calm to light wind and moderate breeze N. West these 24 hours with fair and warm weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keepers cleaning Lamp in lennes and all brass work about the station. Keepers showing 65 visitors in the Tower. 1st asst went fishing.

14: Moderate breeze and light N. West wind these 24 hours with thick damp fog most of the time. Sea smooth. Keepers scrubbing the Office and hall room floors. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport. Also 1st asst. 1st asst showing visitors in the Tower. Had seventeen visitors.

15: Fresh to strong breeze N. West with thick damp fog during 24 hours. Sea smooth. 1st asst taking covers off of coal oil boxes and showing visitors in the Tower. Steam schooner Homer sailed for San Francisco today. Keeper putting wood in the celler. Keeper and 2nd asst also showing visitors in the Tower. Had fourty two visitors. The barometer is 29.94 today.

16: Moderate and fresh breeze N.W. with thick fog most of 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. Keepers putting 200 Gallons of Mineral Oil in Oil-room. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport. 1st asst showing fourty three visitors in Tower.

17: Fresh to moderate breeze N.W. these 24 hours with thick damp fog moste of the time. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 1st asst showing visitors in the Tower. Had twenty two visitors. 2nd asst went to Newport.

18: Light South to N. West wind with thick damp fog during these 24 hours. Sea a little rough. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport after supplies. 1st & 2nd assts showing visitors in the Tower. Had thirty eight visitors. 2nd asst went to Newport.

19: Calm and light N. West wind with thick damp fog these 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keepers showing visitors in the Tower. Had fourty seven visitors today.

20: Light South wind and calm these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours thick damp fog. Last part of 24 hours fair and warm weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper & 1st asst showing visitors in Tower. Had 37 visitors. 2nd asst went to Newport to take mail. Some visitors came to the station at 5.45 P.M., they were refused admittance being to late. The hours for going in Tower is 9.A.M. to 5.P.M.

27: Light N.W. to S. East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with thick, smoke and fog and very warm during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing 20 visitors in Tower. Keeper & 2nd asst hauling hay from Newport.

28: Light variable winds and calm these 24 ours with thick, smoky and warm weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing visitors in the tower. Had 9 visitors. Keeper and 2nd asst hauling hay today.

Steamer Homer sailed today. 1st asst showing visitors in the Tower. Keeper went to Newport after supplies. 2nd asst Isaac L. Smith left the station at 6 A.M. for Willamett Valley for 21 days vacation.

12: Light to moderate and fresh variable winds these 24 hours with frequent rain showers with some thunder and lightning. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing nine visitors in the Tower. Keeper went to Newport.

13: Light South wind these 24 hours; first part of 24 hours fair weather. Last part of 24 hours light rain showers. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing visitors in the Tower and went after mushrooms.

14: Light wind to moderate breeze S. to S.West wind these 24 hours with rain most of 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper showing visitors in the Tower. Had four visitors.

Had 18 visitors today. Keeper showing visitors in the Tower. 1st asst went fishing and after Rock oysters. Three boats from Schooner Kate & Anne were Otter hunting off of Otter Rock. The Schooner Kate and Anne arrived south of the cape and anchored close of the cape at 4.30 P.M.

17: Light variable winds & calm these 24 hours; first part of 24 hours thick damp fog. Last part of 24 hours clear, fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ast working in the garden, fishing, and to Newport after the mail. Mr. Fitzpatrick hauled a load of wood to the station. Keeper putting wood into the cellar today. Had four visitors today. The crew of the schooner are hunting for sea Otter off of Otter Rock yesterday & today.

18: Light variable winds with frequent fog showers first part of 24 hours. Lat part of 24 hours moderate to fresh breeze N.West clearing weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing and showing visitors in the Tower. Had 12 visitors. Keeper went to Newport. Steamer Homer arrived at Newport from San Francisco at 11.30 P.M.

19: Light wind to moderate breeze N. to N.W. these 24 hours with clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keepers putting 200 Gallons of Mineral Oil in Oil-room. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper showing 6 visitors in the Tower. Steamer Homer sailed for San Francisco. Steamer Scotia arrived from San Francisco. Schooner Kate & Anna left the cape and went over Yaquina bar to Newport but left three boats on the beach at the station; the crew are coming back and are going to hunt Oter at Otter Rock north of the cape and are camping on the beach.

20: Light N. to N.Wet wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with clear, fine weather. Sea smooth. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper & 1st ast putting wood into cellar. The crew of Schooner Kate & Anne came from Newport to the beach at station to camp.

21: Light South wind with light rain and thick fog showers during these 24 hours. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. Keeper making out vouchers for Keepers' Salary. 1st asst went to Newport to take the mail. Mr Isaac L. Smith, 2nd asst, returned to the station at 6.30 P.M. from Willamett Valley where he has been on vacation.

22: Light wind to moderate and fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours with clear, fine weather. Sea a little rough. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport. 1st asst went fishing. Had three visitors today. Steamer Scotia sailed for San Francisco.

25: Fresh breeze South with rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fresh breeze to a gale South with hard rain showers. Sea rough. Keepers sawing rails to repair gate that is rotted out at the station. Barometer is 29.50

26: Fresh breeze South these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours hard rain showers. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea very rough. General duties for the day. Had six visitors today. Keeper working on the Quarterly return. Also went after Mushrooms. 2nd asst went to Newport on business.

27: Fresh to moderate breeze South to S.West these 24 hours with hard rain most of 24 hours. Sea rough. General duties for the day. Keeper went over on the hills back of the cape after Mushrooms. The barometer sands at 29.70 today.

10: Light North wind to moderate and fresh N. West [wind] with clear fine weather during these 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd asst putting wood in 2nd asst's cellar. 1st asst went to Newport. A steamer crossed Yaquinar bar to Yaquina city.

11: Light wind to moderate breeze N.West these 24 hours, birt part of 24 hours high dry fog. Last part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keeper and 2nd asst putting wood in 2nd asst's cellar. 1st asst repairing chimney in his Quarters. Keper & 1st asst went fishing.

12: Light N.W. to S. East wind these 24 hours; first part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Last part of 24 hours cloudy but dryweather. Sea smooth. Keeper & 2nd went to Newport. 1st asst went fishing. 2nd asst went over to work clearing his lots in Newport. Three boats with crews went from the cape up to Otter Rock to hunt Sea Otter today, returned to the cape at 11 A.M. where they keep their boats.

13: Light East wind to moderate and fresh breeze South these 24 hours; first part of 24 ours fair weather. Last part of 24 hours light rain showers. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper & 2nd asst went to Newport.

Left the station at 8.30 A.M. 1st asst went fishing. 2nd asst went to Newport to work on his lots and haul wheat to the station to feed the chickens.

[Here appears what looks like a revision, the 9 from 19 overwritten with a "1", thus: 11] 11: U.S. Light House tender Manzanita or the Columbine [Columbia, surely?] passed the light at 6.30 P.M. going South and blew three long and one short whistle.

19: Moderate to fresh breeze East to S. East and South these 24 hours; first part rain. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd asst Isaac L. Smith hauling wheat from Newport. Edward Rice cleaning Oil carriers, Oil measures, stop cocks on Oil butts and etc. The barometer down to 29.60

20: Light wind E. to S.E. with frequent rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light wind to moderate and fresh breeze South with rain showers. Sea moderately smooth. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper & 2nd asst went to Newport.

21: Moderate to fresh breeze to gale South to S. West with rain showers these 24 hours. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. 1st asst hunting geese and killed two. The Whistling??? Buoy from Yaquina went adrift and passed the light one mile going north.

22: Light wind to moderate fresh & strong breeze East these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours fair weather. Last part of 24 hours rain. Sea very rough. General duties for the day. Keeper went to Newport to mail letter to L.H. Inspector informing him the position of Whistling Buoy. 1st asst went to Newport to work on his lots. The Buoy is in same [unintelligible]??? on as yesterday.

23: Fresh and moderate breeze to a gale East to S.E. and South these 24 hours with hard rain most of 24 hours. Sea rough. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport. The barometer down to 29.30 today.
