Sunday, March 21, 1920

A bright cool day. We all staid at home until after twelve. Ben & Josie & the children went to Lee Brumfields. I went to Marvins. George Blair and Denia was there. Marvin & Aubra Brumfield & Hugh and Fred Hutcherson & Reese Smith all went on the mountains. Josie has sick head ache tonight. Franklin is in my bed and I am going to let him stay there.

Monday, April 5, 1920

Rain this morning. The branch was out of the banks. To night it is colde and windy. We all eat dinner at home this evening. Ben & Marvin Henry and Reece went to the Sulpher Springs. Josie Edna Franklin and Mabel and I all went to Marvins. Eula & Harold & Russel Mayhew come. The children had some colored eggs. I think they had a good time. Johnson Reynolds was at Marvins. Jim was there two. It has bin a bad Easter. I am glad that we are as well as usual.

A colde windy day. Ben & Jim worked on Owens spring branch. The children went to school. Some of them had an egg hunt. Josie & I did what had to be done and set by the fire what we could. Ben went to see Mr Jessie and John Hutcherson to day. Did not see Mr Jessie.

There was plenty of ice this morning.

A clear colde day. Ben & Jim & Owen worked on a ditch this morning. Ben went to Strait Stone this evening. The surveyor was at Thomsons. Johnson Reynolds & Marvin Smith went with Ben. Josie ironed. I went to Marvins this evening. Henry & Edna went to school. Lee Brumfield passed here to day. Stoped a few minutes. Marvin is here to night. They are all at the dining room. Josie is at work on Mabels flannel

A clear colde windy day. Ben went with Johnson and Mollie and Christena to Danville. Jim and Owen plowed this evening. Josie washed this morning. I staid with Franklin & Mabel. Roy & Hazel Smith come and got some flowers this evening. Carrie & the children come a few minutes. Heard to night that the guano is at the Depot. Ben has gone to Mr Mayhews to see if he wont haul for them. Jim has gone to Marvins. Henry & Edna went to school. Dr [?] come over there.

A colde windy day. Jim and Ben & Marvin went to Strait Stone this morning. This evening Ben & Marvin went to Chatham. Jim cut wood for Kate. Carrie & the children come down here. Josie baked a cake for Franklins birth day. I think the children enjoyed it. Mollie come a little while. Henry & Edna went to school. Josie & I have not done anything in the way of settled work. Nursed [?]& cooked a little. Franklin is four years olde today.

A rainy day but not hard. Ben went to the island after guano Owen plowed some this morning. I went to Johnson Reynolds. Went by Mr Hutcherson. Talked with the snake a while. Eat dinner at Reynolds. Kate Harvey come down there a few minutes. Josie and the children staid at home. Mabel is sick. Ben put on a new tire and is going to pump up his tires ready to go to Chatham. I am glad things is not any worse.

A cloudy morning and clear this evening. Ben went to Chatham. The road question was decided to day. Carrie & the children spent the day with us. Ben & Marvin and Jim was in Chatham. Mr Owen plowed this evening. Ben brought some fish home tonight. I killed a chicken today. Mabel has bin sick all day. Jim & Ben [word omitted][?]Marvin to night.

Thursday, April 22, 1920

A beautiful day. The men plowed all day today. Mabel is sick. I went off fishing. Did not catch anything much. I bought 7 pounds of fish. Gave Carrie a part of them. Grace carried me. I was glad to go but hated to leave the sick baby and Josie. I know I will not go much more any way. Mollie was here this evening and Carrie was here a few minutes today. I am always troubled a bout some thing. Now it is the little babe. I do hope she will soon get well.

Monday, April 26, 1920

A rainy day. The boys could not do any thing out doors. Josie washed some. Did not hang out her clothes. We had a snack for dinner. Cooked all the dried fruit and all the homony that we had. Hazel Smith is sick. Josies baby is better than she was last week. I got a letter from Denia Blair that gives me trouble. I am so sorrie that she is mad and dont know how to help it.

Friday, May 21, 1920

A rainy morning. Did not rain long. The boys planted a little tobacco then fixed land to plant. Mr Owen went to George Blairs to buy corn. Did not get any. Josie ironed all the morning. I cooked some onions and made a bread pudding, fried ham, and made bread & coffee. Josie planted some beans this evening. I did not do any thing much. Edna and I planted 180 potato slips. My lady cow has bin sick all day.

Saturday, June 12, 1920

A good day. Jim & Ben and Henry worked tobacco and planted potato slips. Ben has gone to Strait Stone tonight to the Lodge. Josie ironed all the morning. Bathed and dressed the children. I got breakfast and milked the cows fed the chickens then I went to Mr Mayhews and Mr Edmons s for potatoe slips. Got a few at both places. Beatrice and Dewie come down here this evening. They said that the baby was sick.

A good day. The men folks worked tobacco. Josie and I got dinner. We had ice cream. Josie has bin sick most of the day. I went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. Nothing much happened to day.

A clear hot day. Jim worked in his tobacco. Ben went to the mill mighily a gainst his will. He let Henry and I go with him. We fished. Caught 14. Had them for dinner. Josie got dinner. She had chicken. I went to Marvins a few minutes. One of the cows is sick. I do hope she will get well. Eva Smith is not well. I hope she may get well soon. 9 10 oclock

A good day. The men thined corn and then cut wheat. Franklin has bin very sick all day. I do hope he will be better by morning. Two of the Hubbard girls washed for Josie today. I got dinner. Reese carried me to White Falls. The river was so muddy that we could no fish and catch any thing. We come by Mount Airy and bough a few things. 9 oclock

A rainy morning. Clear tonight. Jim & Ben plowed some in the corn until the land got two wet. They cut wheat this evening, finished Owens and cut some on Jims. Charles & Jack Harvey come down here a little while this evening. Jack was going to Richmon tonight. At least start tonight. Franklin is sick but we hope he will getting better. I got dinner and ironed some. 9 oclock

A good day. Fanny & Effie Power & Brumfield was here to day. Ben carried them to Lee Brumfields this evening. Ben finished cutting oats this morning. This evening he went to Cedar Forest. He carried Josie and all the children and I. I went with them to the creek. While they bathed I fished. Caught 7 fish. We got home on time to do our work. Carrie has bin sick to day. It is raining.

A good day. Jim & Ben plowed in the tobacco this morning. This evening Ben went with the machine. They thrashed wheat at Ren Worshams and Willie Mayhews. Josie and I went to Carries. Kate Harvey was there. Henry wormed tobacco this evening. He is sick tonight. Ben eat supper at Willies Mayhews to night. There was a big time in Altavista today. 9 oclock

A good day. Ben & Jim went and helped Mr Edmons and Mr Layne thrash wheat then they thrashed here and at Marvins and Reynols. Josie and I got dinner. Several of the men eat with us. Maybel was sick to day. Carrie come a few minutes. I went to look for Berries. Could not find any to do any good. 9 oclock

A good morning. Ben & Jim helped thrash wheat at George Blairs today. Ben went for Mrs Car this evening. Josie has bin sick all day. Dr Owen was in to see her this evening. I do hope she may be well soon. I scrubed the things in the cook room this morning. Jim went to Marvins this evening. Was there when it commenced raining. We have had a good rain and it is raining now.

A good day. Jim and Ben jobed a round until twelve then Ben went to Mr Dews and worked on his car until night. Nellie Brumfield made some preserves. Josie and I was washing. Bettie Haley came and finished for us. Evylin Brumfield is sick. Jim and Ben has gone to Dr Owens to night. I do hope she may soon be better. 9:30 oclock

A good day. Jim staid at home all day. Ben & Marvin went to Brook neal. Have not come home yet. Nellie & Evylin went home. Charles Harvey carried them. Josie baked a cake for Nellie this morning. Josie got dinner. This evening Josie and I washed some. Christenia Reynols and her mother come to Marvins. Josie and I went up there a few minutes. Eva Smith is sick. Carrie washed. Hattie Gilbert helped her. 9 oclock

A good day and very warm. To night we have a hard rain. Jim & Ben topped tobacco nearly all day. Late this evening Ben & Josie and three children went to Jim Powers. Said they would come home tonight but they wont on acount of rain. Josie washed some this morning & got dinner. Corn, butter beans, potato, baked pies. Marvin let Rees take me to White Falls. I caught 34 fish. I eat dinner at Carries. Eva is sick.

A good cool day. Ben & Jim topped tobacco. Josie got dinner. I churned and cut the cucumber for pickle. This evening Josie commenced her a dress and went to Carries a little while. I picked a bucket of baries. I went to Mr Owens. His baby is sick. I am sorrie for them & the baby. I dont know what is the matter with him. Marvin went to Strait Stone to preaching. 9 oclock

A good day. Ben & Jim worked in their tobacco until noon then they sowed a turnip patch and worked in tobacco some more. Josie got dinner and ironed. Reese carried Henry and I fishing. We caught several fish. I could not dig for bait. Josie got them for me. I wore her nice watch the first one that I ever wore. Bettie Haley washed here today. She had a boy to help her. I went to Mr Owens this evening. Henry has bin sick all day.

A good day. The men folks moved tobacco. Josie helped them all the evening. Josie got dinner. She cooked snaps and turnip salit. I went to see Mr Owens baby this morning. They called the Dr to see it. He is very sick. I went to see Sarah Emerson this evening. Henry & Hellen Brumfield went. Reese Smith carried us. He is a good driver. I eat supper with Carrie to night. Jim is at the barn tonight.

A cloudy day. Jim staid at the barn. Ben brought a wheel barrow load of water mellons to the house. I got most of the dinner. Fried chicken and made coffee and bread. Josie baked a cake. Roy Smith was very sick this morning. They called in the Dr. He is better this evening. Josie & the children and I went up there this evening. Jim went to the barn tonight.

A good day. The men folks rehung two cureings of tobacco and moved them and hauled some sticks. Mabel has bin sick all day. They carried her to the Dr to night. I hope she may be better by morning. I got dinner and went to Marvins a few minutes. I gathered some snaps and dried beans and butter beans. Jim has gone to Marvins to night.

A good day. The men cut tobacco. They had Mr Dosses mules this evening. Mabel is very sick. Dr. Owen was at Marvins to see Roy. Josie carried the baby to see him. I got dinner and picked some beans. Dr. Owen brought Josie & the children home and I was glad. None of the boys will have to stay at the barn.

A good day. Cloudy tonight and looks like rain. The men folks cut tobacco and moved some to the grainry. Jim and Ben has gone to mowing. The baby is sick yet. We hope she is better than she was last night. I have done the work at the kitchen today. I went to Marvins a few minutes to day then picked some peas. Roy is better. Marvin & William was cutting tobacco.
