A good day. Cool for the time of year.

Ben and Paul worked until dinner then went to Strait Stone. The Odd fellows had a lecture this evening and the ladies solde ice cream. There was a big crowd there.

Josie staid at home with Franklin.

Marvin brough cream home. Josie went up there and got some. She did not want to go.

Ben went back to Strait Stone tonight. We expect Mr Turner to come with him home. Josie is upstairs preparing a room for him.

Sunday, June 29, 1919

A good day. Cool north east wind blowing. Henry & Ben went to Mr Hankins and got three of his little ducks that got a way when the branch was so high. We all eat dinner at home.

Ben went this evening to meet Jim. Marvin went with him. I went as far as Lee Brumfields. Spent a pleasant evening. Kate Harvey is in Roanoake to see Pearl Wigginton in the hospitle.

Beaula Brumfield is staying with Virginia Harvey.

Jim is here Ok tonight. Carries children was here this evening.

Sunday October 9, 1921

A cool day. Some frost this morning. Ben & family went to Jim Powers. They come home and Ben went to meet Jim at Gretna. They got home at dark. I got supper at twelve. Thought Ben and the rest of them would come home for dinner and they did not come. I went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. Reese sprained his arm trying to crank their car.

Friday November 25, 1921

A good day. Some cooler. Jim & Ben covered the shed to the stable. Got it a bout done. Marvin carried a load of feed to his new home. Josie got dinner. I ironed some this evening. Denia Blair come over a while. She has a bad colde. I was glad that she come. Lee Brumfield killed a beef. We got a peice of it and Carrie got some. Reese went to Renan for it. I am glad to get it. The children went to school today. Sellie Blair gave Henry a mess of salit. He forgot and left it at the school house.

Tuesday December 13, 1921

A cool windy day. Jim & Ben shucked some corn. The wind blowed so that they could hardly shuck. I boiled some hogs ears for dinner. Josie made bread & coffee. I put feathers in Josies new bed tick this morning. This evening I went to the store and bought a few things. I walked up there & back. I brought back 7 pounds 6 of coffee & one of soda. I went to see Kate Harvey a few minutes. She was busy fixing up after hog killing. I come by Mollies. They were very busy abought their land & sausage. I did not stay to bother them long. I have bin working on a quilt. Tonight little Mabel is up yet. I hear her talking. 8:30 oclock

Sunday December 18, 1921

A clear cool day. We all staid at home all day. Carrie and all the children come and spent the day. Reese was driving the car. I hope they got home ok. I cant help being uneasy a bout them. There is so many things that can happen. Kate Harvey come and eat dinner with us. I was so glad that they all come. Would of bin glad that Marvin could of come two. Josie and Martha Miller got dinner. Martha Miller come with Carrie. She is going to help Mollie Reynols tomorrow.

A bright cool day. We all staid at home until after twelve. Ben & Josie & the children went to Lee Brumfields. I went to Marvins. George Blair and Denia was there. Marvin & Aubra Brumfield & Hugh and Fred Hutcherson & Reese Smith all went on the mountains. Josie has sick head ache tonight. Franklin is in my bed and I am going to let him stay there.

A clear cool day. Ben plowed for Mr Mayhew. Jim planted some things in the garden. Owen plowed this evening. Josie & I done one thing an other all day. I went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. Carrie made Hazels hat last night. it is very pretty I think. Josie baked a cake and I killed a chicken for Sundays dinner. Mrs Owen sent us some light bread for supper. It is very nice.

A clear cool day. There was a big frost this morning. Jim & Ben covered the hen house this evening. Josie got dinner. I sewed a little. This evening we all went to Marvins. Henry & Edna went to school.

I wrote Lizzie Bennett a letter to night. I sold Nat Wooding some butter to day.

A good day. Cool for this time of year. Ben plowed with two horses. Jim clean up the ground for him to plow. Mabel has cried most of the day. I got dinner and washed dishes. I went to Marvins a while this evening. The dogs broke up one of the hens this evening. Edna has bin crying with the tooth ache. Jim & Ben has gone to Marvins tonight.

I let Nat Wooding have a pound of butter.

A bright cool day. Jim got up roots [?] in the new ground. Ben went to the island for guano late this evening. Ben & Owen plowed. Henry went to George Blairs for dahalia roots that Cordie gave me. Floid Reynolds come for milk. Josie got dinner. She put out some clothes that she washed Monday. I went to Marvins as usual. Come home and staid with the children while Josie went to the plant bed for salit. 9 oclock

A bright cool day. Jim & Owen worked on the land to get it ready to plant. Josie ironed this morning. I got a snack for dinner. I milked and churned and fed the chickens & dressed a hen for dinner [?] tomorrow at dinner. I got Ben to take me & the children to White Falls. We caught a few fish. Kate Harvey come while I was gone. I was sorry not to see her. Charles Harvey come by this evening.

A clear cool day. Ben & Owen planted corn. Jim plowed in the new ground. Josie got dinner. She went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. I got breakfast this morning and milked the cows and fed the chickens. Worked a little in the garden then went to Kate Harveys and eat dinner then Kate & I went to Mags and staid a while then come home and fed the chickens then went to the plant bed for salit [?] milked.

A cool clear day. Jim worked on his new ground. Ben worked on his corn land. Josie washed this morning. I got dinner. This evening I went to Mr Edmons. Mrs Edmons gave me 30 eggs. I put them under hens as soon as I could after getting home. Mrs Doss and three children come here. Ben has gone to Marvins. Dr. Owen is up there to examine them for insurance.

A good day. Very cool. The men worked on the tobacco land all day except Ben. He went to Johnson Reynolds and paid for the guano and got a bushel of wheat and a bushel of cracked peas for the chickens and three bushels of peas to sow. Josie got dinner this evening. She went to Mr Owens. I washed a little this morning and went to Marvins a few minutes. Kate Harvey was there and Charles. He carried his mother home. 9 oclock

A clear cool day. There was frost this morning. Enough to bite tender things. The boys finished hilling [?] up Jims new ground. Jim planted some potato slips this evening. Josie got dinner. A beautiful day. Cool for May. There was frost this morning. We all staid at home except Henry. He went over to Renan with Reed Smith. Marvin and Ben and Jim rambled a round most of the day. Carrie come a few minutes with the little girls. Paul and Roy played with Edna and Franklin all the evening. I wrote John a letter today. There has bin lots of passing here today. 9 oclock We had our first fried chicken to day.

A good day. Cool and windy. The boys planted one thing an other all day. Josie washed a big washin. I got a snack for dinner. I planted some beans. Josie planted pea nuts. I went to Carries. Edna and Franklin went with me. Marvin was replanting corn. 9 15 oclock

A beautiful day. Cool for June. We all was at home for dinner. We had peas and chicken and chocolate pies. All of us went to Marvins this evening. We went to see the new road. Richard Wooding & family passed on his car. He ask some of us to ride. Josie and the baby and Franklin rode home. I was so glad that she could ride as she had to carrie the baby. 9 15 oclock

A good cool day. Ben & Jim topped tobacco. Josie got dinner. I churned and cut the cucumber for pickle. This evening Josie commenced her a dress and went to Carries a little while. I picked a bucket of baries. I went to Mr Owens. His baby is sick. I am sorrie for them & the baby. I dont know what is the matter with him. Marvin went to Strait Stone to preaching. 9 oclock

A good cool day. Ben & Jim topped tobacco all the morning. At twelve they went to Mt Airy and to Barbers. Bought 100 pounds of sugar and paid 28 dollars for it. This evening Hattie brought some berries. I caned them. Mr Carter & wife & girl and Mr Hunt Hargrove & Miss Alice Hubbard come here a few minutes. I was glad they they come. They went to Strait Stone to preaching. Josie and the children and I went to Carries.

29th A good day. Cool. Some frost this morning. Jim moved some tobacco this morning. Jim hauled some wood. Ben went to hunt some one to cook. Did not get any one but got the promice of help. Carrie come a few minutes. Johnson killed a beef this morning. We got some of it. I am so anxious a bout Josie. So a fraid she will never come home.

A cool windy day. Jim and Ben cut and hauled wood all day. I got dinner. Josie washed the dishes and cut out a suit for Franklin. Marvin and William (col) went to Gretna. I went with them. We bought several things. We made the trip fine. Josie had supper done when I got home

Clear most of the day. Cool & windy. Ben & Jim cut and sawed up the wood that the ice broke and cleaned up the spring yard. The nicest it has bin in along time. I am glad that they did it. Josie has tried to see what she could do today. She helped to milk then cut salit for dinner. Went to the spring & washed it. Killed a chicken and dressed it. Finished dinner then baked a cake. Washed Mabel & Franklin and dressed them. Helped milk tonight and got up the eggs. Washed the dishes after supper. I kept busy but did not do much of any thing.

A clear cool day. Ben & Jim firmed up the garden this morning. Ben hauled wood this evening. Jim split wood in the woods. Clay Harvey come here a bout [day?] this morning on his way to Lynchburg. He got some gas from Ben. His had gave out. Josie ironed some and got dinner. Mrs Car had the sick headache. I put a quilt in the frames all by my self. We all quilted on it this evening. Mollie Reynolds come and helped us. I was glad that she come. Christenia come and went with her home.

Monday, April 17, 1922

A cloudy cool day. Jim plowed all day. Ben cleaned up the branch in the morning. Henry and Edna went to school. Come home at noon & Ben and Josie and all of the children went to Mount Airy to a spelling bee. I staid at home a while. Norman Booker & family went to Level Run and to Jim Bookers fish trap. They had a fish fry. It was very nice much better than I expected. There was a crood there and all seemed to enjoy the sport. Norman Bookers horse got cut in the wire fence yesterday. I do so much thank them for taking me with them.

A clear cool day. Jim and Ben worked on a peice of new ground all day.

Henry and Edna went to school. Josie has bin sick all day. Ben is complaining to night. Hattie Gilbert washed here today.

Josie found her pin that she lost a week or so ago. I am miserable. There is so much that is needing to be done and no one much able to do. And them that could be so much help is not willing but there will be some sort of a way provided for the children.

A clear cool day so cold that I am afraid it will frost tonight. We all staid at home all day. Ben and Josie has bin sick all day. They come to the dining room tonight. I do hope that they will soon be better and that none of the rest will get sick. Jim came home ok. He eat dinner at Marvins. I am glad that he did. Wish I could of bin there two. He came with Faber and Paul and Alma part of the way home. I am glad that he did get to come that way. Oh when I get to thinking about all of the children. I want to see them so bad but cant go and they wont come.

A cool day some frost this morning Tim has plowed some. Ben has tried to work this evening. Him & Josie are some better of their cough. I do hope that they all may get well soon. Henry is not well tonight. I do hope that they all will soon be well. Edna and Franklin went to the store today for beef & salmon. Henry come by from school and got coffee & corn flakes. I wrote two letters and got one today.

I put out fifteen little chickens this evening. Franklin got out some nails that was in old paleings to build a coop to put the hen & chickens in.

Sunday, April 30, 1922

A clean cool day. There was frost this morning. Not enough to [hunt?] much. We all have bein at home all day. There has not any one come to see us in about two weeks. [Reylein?] Reynolds came to see me today. I was glad that he came.

Josie has bin [busy?] about all day. She cooked meat + greens and baked a cake, milked and churned. Kept Busy about all day. I hope I can help her some tomorrow. [Nonny?] is not well by no means. Alma Bennett called over the [thove?]. I was glad that she did. She was on her way home
