Friday, January 25, 1918

A clear day and some warmer. Ben has bin in the house all day but is some better off to day. Henry is sick tonight. I got breakfast and dinner. Josie got supper. Would not have got any but Mr Walter Carr come.

Josie ironed some. Josie fed the horses and hogs. I fed the cows. William Gilbert come this morning and split some wood for us. Marvin and John Smith went to Altavista to day. Mollie Reynolds come to Carries today. I got the yarn to knit for Bruce Sheppard sent it to day.

Monday, January 28, 1918

Rain and hail this morning. The ground is so slick I am a fraid to go out doors.

I milked and that is all that I have done out of doors. Josie got dinner and supper. Ben has bin in doors most of the day.

Henry is sick yet I hope he is some better that he was last night.

Jim Brumfield and Walter Carr went from here this morning I certainly did hate for them to go in such weather.

I have bin knitting on a helmet for Bruce Reynolds. Hope I can finish it tomorrow.

A bad day. Snow melting walkin very bad.

Ben went to see Dr Owen this morning. Got medicine for Henry he is mighty sick yet.

I got dinner to day. I finished a helmet for Bruce Reynolds to day.

I got two letters to day one from Julia Fergerson and one from Lottie Craddock.

Ben went this evening to Ren Worshams and paid for the guano to use this year. Ben is sleeping in my room to night. Edna is with him. Henry is with his mother.

A clear good day.

Ben hauled feed and wood. Josie got dinner.

I went to Marvins and spent the day. Marvin went to the mill.

I hemed on Carries babys pieces. I enjoyed my visit so much.

I got a letter from Bruce and Thelma to day. Ben and Josie got home from the School House this morning just be fore one oclock. They said that they had a good time.

A cloudy [day]. Ben went to the Island for guano. I am at Johnson Reynolds to stay with the children. Johnson and Mollie started to Washington to see Bruce.

A good day. Ben sowed wheat. Owen and Paul Josie and I stripped tobacco. Heard today that John McCormic died this morning. I never have heard of as many deaths and as much sickness as there is now.

The ware houses has closed for a while. Bruce Reynolds come home yester day. Mrs Cook is at Johnsons visiting.

Ben has gone to Mrs Starkeys for seed wheat. He went on his car.

A good day. Paul and Owen Josie and I and the children finished stripping Pauls curing of tobacco this morning and commenced on Bens.

Josie come home to get dinner. She fried chicken and baked cocoanut pies. A bout twelve Gordon and Alma and Ola and Frances Bennett come for dinner. After dinner Bruce Reynolds and his mother come a few minutes. I was glad to see them all. Ben sowed wheat most of the day. This evening Nat Wooding phoned for Ben to come to Reynolds mail box and help him work on his car. Ben went. They could not fix it. They brought it here. Sidney Reynolds come after Nat and carried him home.

Paul finished sowing wheat. Mollie gave me a nice box of candy a birth day present. Marvin Smith paid our taxes this evening. Paul and Ben has bin at the barn to night hangin and putting tobacco in the pit.

A good day. Mrs Farme & Mollie Reynolds and come from Howard Fergersons at Portsmoth this morning.

Julia Fergerson went with us to the depot. Our fare a peice was $5 84 cts. We had a good trip up to Long Island. Julia gave us a nice lunch to take with us and Mr Farmer bough some fruit so we had plenty to eat and that was good. Bruce Reynolds met us at the depot and brought us home. I do thank them for carrieing and bringin me home. I found them all well.

Carrie and her little ones was here. I was glad to see them all. I have felt troubled ever since I got home a bout Mrs Johnson and Mrs Hutcherson being so sick. I want to go and see Mrs Hutcherson soon.

I am so glad I am at home a gain.

A good day. We all staid at home until dinner. Kate & Irvin Harvey come and eat dinner with us. When Kate started home Josie and I walked with her as far as Marvins.

Mollie & Reubin Reynolds come while we were gone. Johnson & Bruce Reynolds come to Marvins. Bruce brought me home. I sent Reubin some roses. The bees swarmed to day.

A good day. Ben went to meet Jim at Gretna this evening. All the children went with him.

To night Clifton and Jane and Bruce & Molie Reynols was here to supper. I was glad to have them. Jack Harvey commenced to paint the house top. Quit and went to Mr Moses. He had Bens horse and buggy.

Josie got dinner. She made a cake. I killed two chickens for supper. I washed two pair of blankets this morning.

Heard to night that my brother went to Chatham Saturday and had some teeth taken out. I do hope he may get well a gain.

Heard tonight that Hughs Walker died this morning. I knew him when we were young.

A good day. Ben & Marvin hunted some. Bruce Reynolds come to see Thelma & Mary. They went with him home and staid a while.

Josie & I got dinner. We had two ducks for dinner. They were fine. I killed and dressed a turkey today. Ben & Thelma & Mary has gone to Bob Starkeys to a party to night.

Bruce & Clifton and Jane Reynolds went to Mrs Gravelys this evening.

A good day. Willie and part of the chldren spent the day with us. Mollie and Christenia and Mildred Fergerson, Reubin & Posie & Bruce Reynolds and Alice Thomson & her children and Mrs. Kent all come to see Willie. I was glad to see them all.

I have not seen Carrie to day. Hope I may see her soon.

A good day. Ben and Josie, Julia, Edna & Franklin and Mabel went to Rob Hubbards to spend the day. This evening Ben & Josie & Rob & Ella went to the Bruce place in Charlott Co. They went to look at the beautiful grounds.

I staid at home & fed the chickens and washed dishes and churned. I eat dinner by myself to day. Then I went to Marvins this evening. They did not have any company.

A clear dry day. Jim & Ben cut tobacco. Marvin helped them. Josie washed this morning and caned three cans of tomatoes this evening. She made Edna a gown. Edna is proud of her new gowns.

I went to Marvins a while. Carrie was sewing. She has done a lot of sewing for her children. I dont see how she does as well as she does with so many to do for.

Johnson Reynols come a while this evening. He said Bruce was helping his mother can tomatoes this evening. Some of them should her for she needs help.

The calf got in the corn field this evening. Josie got him out.

A good day. Jim & Mr Owen finished plant tobacco. Ben replanting his. Marvin and his crowd went to Kates and helped Irvin finish planting his crop. I drawed a few plants. Josie got dinner and made Ben a shirt. We cooked turnip salit for dinner and had corn bread. I did enjoy it. I got an invatation to the school at Charlottsvill. Bruce Reynolds sent it. 9 oclock

A rainy day. Just what we needed. Jim come from Chatham this morning. Bruce Reynolds brought him. We all have staid at home all day. Josie and I got dinner. We fried chicken and had peas and potatoes and corn starch pudding. There has bin very little passin here today. Mr Mayhew & some of his family on thier truck is all that passed that I saw. 8 30 oclock

A good day Ben & Jim finished the ditch and cleaned out the springhouse. Jim plowed this evening. Ben worked on his car a little. Josie baked a cake this morning. Together we got dinner then I went to Reynols's. Bruce is at home. He brought Mollie some of the nices candy I most ever saw.

Christenia was colering eggs for Easter. Johnson was fixing his tobacco land. Jim set one turkey today. Hope that the others will set soon.

A little rain this morning clear this evening. Reese & Paul Smith went from here this morning. Kate Harvey went with them as far as home. I am thank ful for all of their kindness. Mrs Power & Lawson come to see Josie. They got here at bout noon. I was glad that Jessie come. Josie feels bad to day. Mrs Reynols & Julia Fergerson & two children and Bruce come and staid a while. A rainy morning clear to night. Jim & Ben stripped tobacco today. Rob Hubbard is here tonight. He has come for a cow. Bettie the col girl is sick tonight. Josie has bin feeling some better today. Rufus & Mamie come to see Josie this evening. Mr Kent come a few minutes this evening. Rob brought tomatoes & Rufus brought celery. Mamie brought potatoe salid. I had a letter from Carrie today. I am always glad to hear from them. Bruce [Rey] was married Oct 7th 1922.

A beautiful day. The boys hunted some. We had no company until about night then Bruce Reynolds and his wife & Julia & Mildred Fergerson come a little while. I got dinner and churned then milked the cows. Did not get any supper. George Barber and Earnest Pool had trouble. Barber drove into Pools buggy. Did not hurt any one much. The horse ran away. I hope they may settle with out a fuss. Henry has gone to Reynols tonight.

365 Sunday, Dec. 31, 1922 A colde cloudy day - no weather Ben & Jim went to Mr Bookers before breakfast Jim fed his stock and Ben milked his cows. Mr Booker & family was at Mrs Jacksons. The cubian[?] went away this morning. Ernest & Lottie Craddock and Johnson and Posie & Bruce & his wife and Alice Thomson come to see Josie this morning. This evening Lee & Grace Brumfield & Carles and Virginia Harvey come to see her. Well time is what I want. But I am glad that Xmas is over the excuse for idleness & extravagance and I hope to see another Xmas but may not/amen

A good day. Jim helped [Will?] Farthing and Norman Booker thrash wheat and then they thrashed here and then then at Mr. Laynes. Ben uncovered his tobacco plants this morning. The children staid at the machine all the evening. Bruce Reynols and his wife come a few minutes. They had bin to George Blains for some butter. They did not get out of the car. I mended Franklin's overalls this evening. Ray Booker played with the children all the evening. Miss Rena Mayhew borrowed the freezer. Said they was lookin for company.

A good day. The boys helped Mr. Mayhew thrash wheat and helped him plant tobacco until twelve oclock. Then they eat dinner. Ben and Henry staid and played croqet. Jim come home. He had a letter that he wanted to mail. The children and I did not eat until Jim come. After dinner we went to see Bruce Reynols and wife. Julia Fergerson was canning berries and preserving. [Reubin?] brought us home in his new car. Mr. Mayhew and some boyes went seining. They caught several nice fish and a big eel. He gave Henry three nice fish and a big eel. I helped them to dress them.

A good day. We got up early this morning. Ben had gone to Gretna . I was surprised as I had not heard any thing about his starting up so early. Jim and John stripped tobacco all day. Ben come home by eleven oclock. Heard today that Bruce Reynols wife has a son. The Emerson children has a lot of school children with them tonight. Two of the Worsham children one Milam one Brumfield. Henry and Jo Edmons has gone down there to night. Jim sent off an ax helve today. I sent some goods to make Edna[she stopped in midsentence]

A very warm day for December The [wen?] cut wood. for fine wood all day. The children went to school. I done all day what I could and noone could tell any thing had bin done.

Mollie & [Dessia?] come to see me I was very glad that they come it had bin a long time since [Dessia?] had bin to see us. She said she thought that Isla was feeling better than she had Mollie said that Bruces wife was in the Hospitle she had a tumor removed I hope she may get well soon
