Monday April 18, 1921

A bad day rained most of the evening and still raining. Jim went to Chatham Marvin carried him. Ben went for [Guave] carried a log to the mill. Henry went with him. John went to see Corrie a [] this morning John and henry went to Strail Stone this evening. They went horse back. We had fried chicken for dinner. The first that we had killed this spring. To night is a [??ny] bad time on little chickens hope it will quit raining soon.

Saturday November 12, 1921

A colde windy day. Ben stripped tobacco. He finished a curing. Henry tied all the time that Ben was sorting and Josie part of the time. Jim went to Chatham. Today was Nellies birth day. Reese Smith carried Jim and Paul and I went. I bought several things. Reubin and Robbert Reynols come with Reese as far as their home. They had bin to Black Stone to play football and was on their way back to Chatham. Josie ironed to day and got dinner and supper. I went to Marvins this evening. Carrie was ironing. Henry & Ben went to Renan late this evening. Ben bought a peice of beef for Sundays dinner.

Monday December 12, 1921

A good day. Jim & Ben shucked a shock of corn and gave the stalk to the cows. Then they loaded up the car with Jims scrap meat and sausage, a few chickens and went to Chatham. I think they did fine. They attended to several things and got home before dark. I am very glad that they went. The roads are very good now. Josie scrubed some floors and got dinner. I went to George Blairs. Denia was not at home. She had gone to Altavista with Otho and Sallie. I would of bin glad to see her but I dont blame her. If it was me I think [?] go evry chance I could get. I spent a pleasant evening with the girls. The children went to school today.

Monday December 19, 1921

A good day. Jim and Ben shucked some corn and hauled stalks and put in the stable. Josie washed dishes and milked the cows. I went to Chatham with Johson & Mollie Reynols. Clack Hubbard and Christenia Reynols went with them also. I dont think any body bought much. They ask such prices for what they had to sell. Henry & Edna went to school. Franklin is not well. Virginia Harvey come here and Josie and Virginia made candy for to treat the school children on Wednesday. I had a good day. I met with several of my kind folks and acquaintances. I was so glad to go and every thing [?] of good. Alice Thomson was at Chatham.

Friday December 23, 1921

A good day. The land was covered with hail and snow but it nearly all melted before night. Ben & Jim did not do much of anything this morning. This evening Ben carried Jim to Gretna on his way to Chatham to spend the holidays with his folks. Josie and Henry went with them. They got home in good time. They bought several things. Among them they got some cow feed. I am so glad of that. Ben is in the basement not trying to stain the floors. Josie made me a nice apron tonight. I am glad of it. I got several Xmas cards from the grand children & friends. I killed 4 chickens and dressed them ready to cook. Two for Jim. Heard to day that Oscar Brumfield is sick. Hope he may soon be well. I do hope that Mabel will soon be well a gain.

A clear cold day. Ben went to Chatham for Jim. They got home at dark. They come by Letcher Craddocks and got some honey. Josie washed some. We eat a cold dinner except coffee. I kept the baby. I do the work that has to be done or keep the baby from before light until after dark. I am afraid that I can't hold out at it until spring. I feel so bad I don't see no way to help myself. 9 oclock

A cloudy day but no weather to hinder work. Ben & Jim worked on their new ground. Josie worked on her dress.

Henry & Edna went to school. Henry has a bad cough to night. Jim mended his shoes. Reese come this evening for some thread that Ben got in Chatham. 9 o clock

A cloudy day and rain tonight. Jim & Ben went to Gretna today. Ben come home. Tonight Jim was going to Chatham. He carried his meat to Chatham. Josie washed. I staid with the children. I went to Marvins a few minutes this evening. The children went to school to day. Josie & I worked on quilts this evening.

A clear colde day & windy. Lizzie was with us all day. Carrie & the children come this evening a little while. Jim come home a bout dark. He said he walked from Gretna home. He said that there was two deaths in Chatham last night. I am so sorry that there is so much sickness a bout.

A beautiful day but colde. Jim started to Chatham this morning. He went with Posie Reynolds. Ben & Owen cut some wood this morning. He went to the saw mill this evening. Josie got dinner. I washed dishes after dinner. Josie went to Carries this evening a little while. Henry and Edna went to school today. I cut some quilt peices today. Heard that the surveyor was at work on the road way today.

Saturday, March 20, 1920

A clear windy day. Ben & Jim & Henry split wood at the wood pile. Jim started to Chatham this evening. He started walking. Ben & Henry went to Strait Stone this evening. They walked. A man come here last night and ask to stay all night. Ben let him stay and Josie fixed him supper. I kept the baby while she was at it. He said he had walked from Greene Burough NC. Josie & I have set by the fire all that we could. Henry bought him a watch at Strait Stone.

A rainy morning and cloudy all day. Ben started to Chatham. Got as far a Renan. Met up with Thomson and let him talk them out of going. This evening Jim & Ben worked on the hen house. Marvin & William helped them put up the slats [?] Josie has bin suffering all day with toothache. Carrie come here a few minutes this evening. I went home with her. Come by and cut some salit. I finished a quilt that I had been workin on. The children did not go to school.

A colde windy day. Jim and Ben & Marvin went to Strait Stone this morning. This evening Ben & Marvin went to Chatham. Jim cut wood for Kate. Carrie & the children come down here. Josie baked a cake for Franklins birth day. I think the children enjoyed it. Mollie come a little while. Henry & Edna went to school. Josie & I have not done anything in the way of settled work. Nursed [?]& cooked a little. Franklin is four years olde today.

A good day. Jim & Owen plowed. Ben went to see some men. This evening Ben went to Gretna. I went two. Nellie & Evylin come with us home. I am glad to see them. We saw Grace and Kate as we come home. Charley Harvey is here tonight. Ben has gone to the school house to night. Heard to day that Ren Worsham & George Blair Mr Hutcherson & Mr Anderson went to Chatham to day.

A rainy day but not hard. Ben went to the island after guano Owen plowed some this morning. I went to Johnson Reynolds. Went by Mr Hutcherson. Talked with the snake a while. Eat dinner at Reynolds. Kate Harvey come down there a few minutes. Josie and the children staid at home. Mabel is sick. Ben put on a new tire and is going to pump up his tires ready to go to Chatham. I am glad things is not any worse.

A cloudy morning and clear this evening. Ben went to Chatham. The road question was decided to day. Carrie & the children spent the day with us. Ben & Marvin and Jim was in Chatham. Mr Owen plowed this evening. Ben brought some fish home tonight. I killed a chicken today. Mabel has bin sick all day. Jim & Ben [word omitted][?]Marvin to night.

Rain this morning and a little this evening. Clear tonight. Ben carried Jim to Chatham. Carried caned fruit and lard. Ben get home before dark. Josie ironed some and got dinner. I milked and churned and went to the plant bed for salit. I went to Carries a few minutes this evening. Edna & Franklin went to Mr. Edmonds to play with Franklin Edmond.

A good day. Some clouds but no rain here. Jim & Ben worked on tobacco until dinner then they & Josie and three of the children went to Mr Bill Tuckers burial and then to Chatham. I do hope they got there ok. I got supper. Reese & Henry and I eat. I milked. The boys fed the horses & hogs. Now we are ready to go to bed. Reese and Henry will sleep in my room. 8 30

A good day. Jim and Ben thined corn until twelve oclock. Jim went to Chatham this evening. Ben carried him to Gretna. I went with them. Lees folks was workin in their tobacco. Grace gave me some cabbage. I am glad of them. Josie washed. We come by Kates from Gretna. Mrs Owen was there and Christenia Reynolds. Charles and a work man was at work on the house.

A rainy day. Just what we needed. Jim come from Chatham this morning. Bruce Reynolds brought him. We all have staid at home all day. Josie and I got dinner. We fried chicken and had peas and potatoes and corn starch pudding. There has bin very little passin here today. Mr Mayhew & some of his family on thier truck is all that passed that I saw. 8 30 oclock

A good day. Very warm. I have bin here at Tim Bennetts all day. Tim and Gorden went to Chatham. Tim said that Lee Brumfield was there. Mrs Jefferson and Miss Estell Riddle to Tims. Well I don't know to write. Wish I could hear from home.

A good day. Jim worked all day. Ben went with me to Chatham. Kate Harvey went with us. We eat dinner at Nellies. Nellie and Evylin come home with us. Josie staid and got dinner. This evening Josie and Carrie went to see Mollie. They walked up there. Reese met them with the car and brought them home. Marvin commenced to pull leaves today. 9 oclock

A good day. Ben fired tobacco. Jim went to Chatham. Marvin carried him a part of the way. Josie ironed some and got dinner. I picked some peas and killed a chcken and churned. This evening Hugh Brumfield and Henry Brumfield and I went to White Falls fishing. We did not catch many fish. Kate Harvey come while I was gone.

11th A good day. Ben & Jim plowed all day. I scalded beans all the morning. Josie sewed a little and got most of the dinner. Marvin & Carrie and Kate Harvey and I went to Chatham this evening. Carrie bought a few things for the children. Kate a few things and I bought a few things two. Josie had Carries children this evening.

18th A good day. Ben harrowed on wheat land. Jim come from Chatham today. Josie and Ben went to Mayhews to see the little boy that is so badly burned. Mollie Reynolds come here a little while. I have staid at home all day to day. I got dinner and ironed some. Josie baked some nice tea cakes for the chldren to take to school. Jim and Ben are tying primeings.

21st A good day. Ben finished sowin wheat to day. Jim went to Long Island this morning for guano and oats. He got home a bought one o-clock then disked the rest of the day. Josie is about and that is all. I got dinner and went to Mr Owens. Come home and went to Marvins. He had bin to Chatham. Carrie had washed. I think that they are mad with me. If I knowed what a bout I would beg forgiveness.

A good day. Jim and Ben went to Gretna with tobacco. John Hutcherson loaded for Owen. Franklin and I staid here most of the day. We went to Marvins this evening. Jim went to Chatham from Gretna. Heard this evening that Beaula B will be married tomorrow at Lynch Burg. I wish I could know how Mabel is doing tonight.

A cloudy day and rain tonight. Ben went to the mill. Jim is at Chatham this evening. Ben went to Jim Powers to see the children tonight. There was to be a lecture at the school house. Henry went. He has not come home yet. Carrie and the little children come. I was glad. She made bread for our supper. Guess Bulah was married today. I sowed some on my quilt. Ben heard from Josie. She is getting on ok I hope.

Rain last night. Rain and hail a gain to day. Ben and Jim shucked some corn this morning. This evening Ben carried Jim and Nellie and Vinia to Gretna on their way home to Chatham. I went with them to Gretna. I bought several little things. We left them at Gretna. It rained and hailed all the way home but we made it ok. Josie had made a fire when we got back. She was going to get supper. Henry went to school. He was so colde that he cried.

A cloudy morning. The trees was covered with ice that is all gone to night. Jim is in Chatham we think. Ben worked on Henrys bycicle then split a little wood. Went rabbit hunting late this evening. Did not kill any thing. I have bin busy all day. I got breakfast, milked the cows, cut up two pumpkins, put them on to cook, cleaned a hogs face, put that and haslet on to cook then got dinner then churned, put on some spar ribs to boil, watered the calf, changed the water that chidlins was in. By that time my hogs face was done. Picked the bones out and made scrapple. Took up my pumpkin and washed up the things that I used. Brought in some wood. Went to the spring twice. Josie got supper. Mrs. Car and Josie washed dishes.
