Saturday, August 7, 1920

A good day. The men folks suckered tobacco. Ben went to Mr Vaugns [?] to get a flue. Josie and I got dinner. Nellie and Evylin started home. Marvin carried them to Altavista. I went to Marvins this evening. She was washing. Kate Harvey and Hattie Gilbert was helping her. We ironed some this evening. 9 oclock

A rainy day most of the day. Ben & Henry suckered tobacco a while. Jim worked on his tobacco. Ben kept up fire/fine [?] in the barn. Josie got dinner. I made a few preserves of peaches that growed here. Pulled green[s] [?] Carrie come a few minutes for some soda. We owed her a pound. Josie is washing dishes now. The baby is a sleep. Kate come to Carries to day to see about some sowing. 8:30 oclock

A good morning. Rain this evening. Ben & Jim [&]Henry suckered tobacco. Josie and three children and went to Ricevill to the assosiation. Marvin & his family went. Reese drove Bens car. There was a big crowd there and a plenty to eat. Every one seem to have a good time. I met a lot of old friends. Jim & Ben & Henry eat cold dinner. 9 oclock

A cloudy bad day. The boys suckered tobacco most of the day. Nellie caned some tomatoes. Josie helped her some. Josie got dinner. This evening Nellie and Josie picked beans. I helped some. Ben yoked the spotted heifer. She kept getting in the corn. I went to Carries a few minutes this evening. Kate & Virginia was there. I am suffering with my leg tonight.

A good day. The men worked on the tobacco. This evening Ben carried Nellie & Evylin home. Josie & Mabel went with them. They got home a bout dark. Josie got dinner. I helped Nell pick beans. I went to Carries a few minutes. I gathered some musk mellons. I suckered a little tobacco to day.

A good day. The men folks suckered tobacco to day. Josie and I got dinner. Bettie Hayley washed here. Mr Mcraye come to day. I went to George Blairs this evening. Denia and the girls were busy mending. Kate and Charles Harvey come to Marvins and got a lot of matoes. Josie gathered a lot of tomatoes and picked up apples for the hogs. Jim has gone to the barn. Henry has gone with him.

A good day. Clouds about but did not rain here. Jim & Ben & Henry[?] suckered tobacco all day. Marvin & Rose Smith eat dinner with us. I was glad to have them. Mrs Booker came to see us this evening. Mrs Car churned and helped shell butter beans & scraped potatoes helped me get dinner what she could. I got cabbage & cymblings and butter beans cucumber & tomatoes & potatoes for dinner. Hattie [Gillient?] washed here today. Kate Harvey come this morning. She brought Henry two shirts & nice apples.

A good morning rain this eve & tonight. The boys suckered tobacco this morning. Ben [drawed?] the wheat out of the box. It was heating. He intended going to the mill if it had not rained. Ben & Henry went to the store tonight. Have got in at nine o'clock. Mrs Car churned and shelled butter beans and scraped potatoes. We get plenty tomatoes now. Ella Hubbard sent Josie a nice basket of tomatoes by Nat Wooding today. I got a letter from Effie Brumfield today was glad to get it am always glad to hear from them

A good day. The men suckered tobacco all day. Max Car went from here this evening. Denia Blair come to see Josie this evening. She brought some nice strawberries that Sallie Blair sent to Josie. Nat Wooding sent her 4 peaches very nice. Mollie Reynolds come to see Josie late this evening. I got dinner. Mrs Car helped me what she could.I starched the clothes. Intend to iron in the morning. Several of the people met at Straight Stone this evening and cleaned up the church.

A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry suckered tobacco all day. Josie has not felt as well as usual today. Edna & Franklin went to the Store this morning for medicine. They went to Reynols this evening to see about getting Edna dresses fit. There was no one at home but Reubin & Floid[?]. I am intending to go to Gallilee to morrow if nothing happens to hinder, Jim & Ben has gone to Norman Bookers barn tonight. I got some snaps from our cornfield the first [....?]

A cloudy day but no rain. Jim & Henry suckered tobacco. Ben carried me to Marvin's this morning. He come home. Marvin carried me to Galilee to the assosiation. After preaching Lizzie & Lonny[?] and Earl and wife Marvin and Carrie & the children and I went to the place we moved from. I was glad of the trip. Marvin sent me home. Russ[?] & Paul come home with me. Kate come to keep house from Mrs Car was getting dinner. Kate milked to [.......] we come by [Liz?] well I am a sleep.

A good day. Jim & Henry has suckered tobacco all day. Ben staid at the barn is up there tonight. Josie has not bin so [pent?] today. I got dinner and made some damson preserves. This evening I washed a little. Denia come to see Josie. She did not stay but a little while. Said that the girls wanted to go to Ede Hill to night. Irvin Harvey come a few minutes this morning. [a col?] woman[?]come here this morning. Years from now some one may wonder at some of the scratch. I am asleep.

A good day rain tonight. Ben finished cutting tobacco enough to fill his barn. They suckered tobacco this evening. Ben has gone to the barn tonight. Josie has suffered a lot today. No one come to see her today. I think she was glad. I got dinner and caned 8 cans of tomatoes. I am afraid they wont keep. We have some of the finest tomatoes I ever saw. I guess the rainy time will ruin them. Jim & Ben went to Renon today. Did not stay many minutes. I got supper this evening while I canned tomatoes.

A good day. Jim & Henry suckered tobacco until twelve then worked on the barns. Ben rode around trying to get help. Did not get any one. Ben is at the Barn tonight. [Clifton?] & Jane and the boy & Thelma Brunmfield come to see Josie today. I was glad to see them. I was at the kitchen getting dinner. Jane peeled the potatoes & mashed them. Mrs Car & I peeled a few tomatoes & I caned them. I walked a lot today looking for a cow and did not find her. Jim found her and a little calf. Ben helped me get her in the stall.

A rainy morning. Clear this evening. The men suckered tobacco today. Alma wanted to go home. Ben carried her home. He let me and three children went with him. We found them well at Jims. We stopped at Gretna and bought a few things. We got home in good time. Johnson stopped and looked at the phone. Said he would come in the morning and fix it up. I will miss Alma. She cooked and helped me so good. The children all like Alma. She was so good to them Ben said she fed them good while I was a way. Ben and Henry milked this morning.

A good morning. Rain this evening. The men suckered tobacco half the day. Did not do any thing this evening. John Wards family went visiting this evening. I made Franklin a pair of pands and [waist?]. Finished them this evening. Jim pulled some water mellons to day. Well I dont know any thing.

A good day. Very warm. Ben went to the mill. Franklin went with him. They got back by twelve. The rest of them suckered tobacco. One of the [Mary or many] [Candidy?] come to see them today. Nellie cleaned up their room. I got dinner and churned this evening. Three children and I went to Mr Bookers. None of them was at home. We come back. I picked some snaps. Got some vines for the cows. Edna helped me milk. They have had a good time to day. Have some water mellons to day.

A good day. Jim and Ben suckered tobacco until twelve. Then they went to the election. Children and I went to Kates a while. Got a fraid it was going to rain and Oscar Brumfield brought us home. There was the biggest crowd at Renan that I ever saw there on election day. John Ward and Henry plowed some late tobacco. They finished in time for early supper. Ben and Jim has gone to Renan to hear from the election. Nellie boiled some grapes for jellie. I hope she may have good [luck?].

A good day. The men suckered tobacco. Nellie picked some grapes and made some grape jelie. I got the most of the dinner. This evening Ben went to Strait Stone. The children and I went with him. We bought some sugar and a few of other things. Heard that Lee was defeated in the elect tion. I am sorry but some one had to be left.

A good day. Very hot. The men suckered tobacco all day. I got dinner started and then went to the garden and gathered tomatoes. Lee and Hildna come a while this morning. They said they were going to preaching at Edge Hill. They had all day preaching and dinner on the ground. Nellie sewed some today. Edna and Franklin went to Mr. George Emersons this evening to play with the Emmerson girls. We are getting plenty of tomatoes now and all other vegetables but no fruit.

Saturday, August 11, 1923

A good day a while. Then it rained. The men suckered tobacco a little while this morning. Then they quit work. Ben carried me and the children to White Falls. I caught several fish. Then we eat dinner. By that time it was a bout ready to rain. We started home and got as far as Jim Thomsons. Ben got in a ditch and could not get out with out help. Johnson Reynolds was in the mud two after the rain. Some men come and got them out. The children and I went to Thomson's house. Mrs. Thomson was as nice as could be. I wore one of Mrs Thomson's dresses home. I hope I did not soil it. She was so kind. Nellie got dinner.

A good day. Ben helped Mr. Booker work on his barn. The rest of them suckered tobacco. Isla Blair come over here a few minutes this morning. I was glad to see her. Heard today that Buck Mills was hurt yesterday by a car running over him. I hope he may soon be out a gain. Ray Booker come to see Franklin this evening. Mabel and Franklin has bad colds. Have not heard form Edna yet. Nellie heard from Evelyn today. Lelia Ward washed for us today. Nellie gathered some grapes to make jellie today.

A good day. The men suckered tobacco all but Ben. He helped Mr. Booker work on his barn all day. Franklin and Mabel has bad colds. Nellie got dinner. I went to Maggies for the first in a long.[sic] Found them all well. Come by Kates. She was well. Bill and Irvin went to St. Andrews to preaching. We Kate and I stoped in at Dr. Owens a few minutes. Mrs. Owen was sorry for me and brought me home. I was glad to get home so easy but if I could help my self I would not be any trouble or expence to any one.

A cloudy day and some rain. Not enough to stop work. The men suckered tobacco. Jimm went to Strait Stone to get the horses shod and flue joints. Got dinner. Nellie caned some tomatoes and gathered some grapes. We staid at home and I have no news. Lelia Ward went to a lodge meeting. Mabel got a letter from Edna to day. I got one from Kitty Reynols. I am glad to hear from any of them. I want to go for Edna tomorrow but the men is so busy I am afraid they wont go. Fraklin and Mabel has bad colds.

A cloudy day. No rain. The men suckered tobacco all day. Norman Booker helped them a while. This evening Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie bathed the children. I killed two chickens and dressed them. I wanted to go to Marvins but could not get off. Hope it may be good enough that we can go in the morning. Floid Reynols and Stuart Owen come here tonight to see Henry. I reckon we have lots of water mellons now. I gathered a basket of tomatoes this evening. I think that the children are feeling better today.

A beautiful day. Jim and Henry and John Ward suckered tobacco. Ben has bin sick all day. He was taken sick in the night last night and has bin sick all day. He is some better now. Claud Fitz and family come here today. Norman Booker went to Gretna for the them. He brought Edna home from Marvin Smiths. Nellie went with him for them. They have a nice baby. We have a lot of water mellons now and see that every one enjoys then.

A good day. Ben fired tobacco all day. The others suckered. We folks at the house cooked and churned and [nursed?]. This evening the children and I went to the tobacco patch a little while. Then we went to Mr Bookers. Mrs was not at the house. I come home. I come by the pea patch and gathered some peas and shelled them. Clifton Reynols and family and Henry Brumfield come. I was glad to see them. I have finished stringing snaps for dinner tomorrow.
