A cloudy morning.
Before we finished eating breakfast Mr Layne come to get his calf. I got him in the stable and Ben tied him but they could not carry him home he was so stubborn. Ben and Owen lost about two hours time then they went to work.
Ben put a yoke in the cow this morning. Henry and I worked on the fence nearly all the morning. The calves was in the pasture to night. Ben worked on his pigs to day. Doris Brumfield and C Reynolds come a while this evening. Josie planted some hyacinths bulbs to day.
I brought in my daghlia roots this evening.
I put on a pair of new shoes to day. I went up [ink mark]
Well I went to sleep and made a mark.
I washed the babys flanels this evening.
Jim & Ben went to the barn to nigh to tie tobacco.
A colde windy day. Ben stripped tobacco. He finished a curing. Henry tied all the time that Ben was sorting and Josie part of the time. Jim went to Chatham. Today was Nellies birth day. Reese Smith carried Jim and Paul and I went. I bought several things. Reubin and Robbert Reynols come with Reese as far as their home. They had bin to Black Stone to play football and was on their way back to Chatham. Josie ironed to day and got dinner and supper. I went to Marvins this evening. Carrie was ironing. Henry & Ben went to Renan late this evening. Ben bought a peice of beef for Sundays dinner.
A beautiful day. Jim & Ben shucked some corn this morning and fed the cows the stalks. Then they stripped tobacco until dinner. Josie and I persuaded Ben to go to the mill. Josie shelled some corn whle washed the dishes. We went with him. We fished some. We caught 39 fish dressed them and intend to cook them for breakfast in the morning. I was so glad to go fishing. We come by the store and bought a few things. Jim and Ben tied some tobacco to night. The children went to school except Mabel. She went with us fishing. I have not seen any of Marvins folks today.
A cloudy day. Ben tied a few primeings this morning. This evening Ben went to Gretna. This morning Josie & she shelled butter beans. Josie and I got dinner then we went with Ben to Gretna to meet Jim. He had bin to Danville. Tobacco sold low. The market opened to day. The Renan school opened today. Jim & Ben has gone to Marvins tonight.
A cloudy bad day. Had a hard rain this evening and all the pea hay that was on the place is lying on the ground. Jim and Ben tied framings all day. Josie caned some tomatoes this morning and got dinner. I shelled some beans and went to Marvins. Was there when it rained so hard. Charles Harvey was here this morning listing the property. Carry had made the girls some dresses. 8 oclock
A cloudy day. The boys tied tobacco. Josie got the most of the dinner. Johnson & Mollie come down here a little while this morning. Betty Haley washed here today. Josie and the children went to Marvins. I went later on. I worked a few button holes for Carrie this evening. Ben has gone huntting to night. 8 oclock
A rainy day. Jim and Ben tied primings. Josie caned some apples. I peeled them. I got a snack for dinner. I shelled beans all evening. Josie is very much complaining. I do hope she will be better soon. Mabel has bin as frisky as a kitten all day.
14th A good day. Ben worked on wheat land all. Jim tied tobacco. Mr Cawthorn come to day. He was here for dinner. Mr [?] was here to day. Wanted to sell Ben a truck. He did not buy. I went to George Blairs this evening. Denia and Cordie was gone to Rens. They come home. I had a pleasant evening.
25th A good day. Jim tied tobacco most of the day. Ben got home tonight from the hospittle. Josie is very bad off at the hospittle. Oh I am so sorry for her. I do hope she may get well. We are doing the best we can. The baby cried a lot of of the time last night. I am so troubled I can [not] write as I ought.
30 A good day. A killing frost this morning. Jim & Ben tied tobacco all the morning. This evening Ben went with Mrs Car home. Got back at sundown. Carrie had a card from Josie this evening. Carrie washed and dressed Mabel & Franklin this evening. I don't know anything to write to night.
A good day. Jim and Ben tied tobacco all the morning. This evening Ben carried me & Franklin to White Falls. I caugh several fish. I was so glad to go. Kate come while I was gone. I was sorry not to see her. Carrie was here when I come home. She commenced to dress the fish. Mrs Car helped her. I was glad for them to helpe me so much. Carrie come and dressed the baby this morning. Marvin solde his cow today.
A good day. The boys stripped tobacco all day and tieing yet 8 tonight. Ben heard from Josie today. She is getting on very well. Carried bathed the baby this morning. She brought me some meat and scrapple. Marvin went to Gretna & Altavista today. Carrie went to Altavista. I am willing to work all that I am able but the staying so close and studieng how to get every thing done is killing me but I cant help myself.
A good day. Ben went to help Oscar a bout his car. Jim cleaned the hog pen. They both worked on tobacco some this evening. Jim has gone to Marvins to tie tobacco tonight. Ben went to Mr Powers to see the children and all the others. Henry went to school. We had quite a washing here to day. This morning Hattie Gilbert and I washed until twelve. Then Bettie Haley and Schooler [?] come. They washed some. I am glad that it is done. Ben heard from Josie today. She is able to sit up. I do hope she may soon be so she can come home.
A very rainy day. Ben worked on his car this morning. Helped Marvin tie tobacco a while this evening. We are out of wood. Have not got any corn shucked. Jim come home from South Boston just as wet as could be. John Hutcherson got in the creek with his truck and hiered Edward to pull him out. I am sorry for Jim and cant help him and he would not let me if I could.
A good day. Ben hauled some wood. Jim helped. Marvin striped tobacco all day and Ben & Jim went up there tonight to tie tobacco. Henry went to school. Some of the boys from school went to Gretna to play basket ball. Bettie Haley washed here today. Josie & Mrs Car finished shelling the white beans today. I ironed some and got dinner as usual. Cooked beans and potatoes.
A good day. Ben & Jim hauled and sawed some wood to day. Ben tied my calf this morning and carried her to the spring. We will put her in the shop when it rains. Mrs Car was sick this morning and suffered very much but is better tonight. I ironed some to day. Stewed pumpkin and killed a chicken. Henry did not go to school today. He had no shoes fit to wear except his Sunday best and it was so muddy he would of ruined them [?]
Josie has felt mighty bad today. I don't feel well. Oh at the trouble I see about that that cant be helped. Josie quilted most of the day. I got dinner. I quilted some this evening & tonight. Irvin Harvey come this evening and brought us some salit. I was glad of it. Henry and Edna went to school. Bob Starkey wants to rais a barn to morrow.
A good day. The boys finished getting up hay and oats and commence plowing tobacco. Mrs. Trent and I got dinner. Josie had bin feeling better today. Grace Brumsfield & Lottie Kellie come to see Josie today. Grace brought some apples. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. I am glad to get her to wash. Henry got very mad today because we tied the dog. Mrs. [Eldens?] little baby was buried this morning. Nellie B came this evening. We are glad to have her. My cow is bad off in some way. I don't know what to do for her.
A good day. Ben cut peas for Kate today. Jim stripped tobacco. Jim & Ben both tied some tonight. Lizzie is here again tonight. I am glad for her to be here. Daisy ironed some this morning. I got most of dinner & churned. The children went to school. I went this evening and gathered some peas & got some potatoes for tomorrows dinner. I got a letter from Carrie. Was glad to hear from them. Edna had to write a letter tonight. Henry has gone hunting.
A cloudy day but no rain. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day & tonight they tieing. I and Mabel went to Mr Booker. They were at the Barn at work on their tobacco. Josie has bin feeling some better today. Nellie & I got dinner. Mr Lipscome & Mrs Lipscome come to see Josie this evening. We finished putting up the sweet potatoes today. Queen washed here today.
A good day. Jim stripped tobacco. Henry disked land for wheat. Ben put shoes on his horse then he carried Edna & I to the river. We fished. Edna caught three fish. Ben carried us and he come home & then come after us brought us home and then went to Gretna and back by late supper and now he is at the barn tieing tobacco. Jim & Nellie are tieing two [sic]. Nellie & Bettie got dinner & supper. I milked the cows. Josie is very bad off. They carried me fishing because they know I am olde that I never will go many more times.
A good morning. Rain this evening. Ben worked on his wheat land until it rained. He fixed to plant some bulbs. I planted a few hyacinths. I sent for the News today. Jim & Nellie tied some tobacco today.
Nellie washed some this morning. Josie has not suffered quite as much today as she does some days. Henry carried 4 chickens to Kate Harveys this morning. He bought 4 steel traps.
A good day. Ben worked on his tobacco all day. Henry and I helped him finish tieing. Tonight Henry went to Dr. Owens for tablets for his mother. Jim & Nellie has not come home yet. The children went to school today, Bettie and I got dinner. Bettie picked up the walnuts today. Mabel and I went to the barn this evening. I tied tobacco and Mabel played. Etta Gilbert brought me a few dried apples.
A good day. Ben & Jim stripped tobacco all day. Jim & Nellie went to the barn tonight. Ben went to Mr Edmons. They have a cow choked with a sweet potatoe. I hope she may get it out and not die. This evening Mrs George Hutcherson & Mrs Charley Anderson & Nellie Hendricks come to see Josie. Nettie brought Josie some grapes. Mr Booker & little Carol come. Mr Booker brought pears. I tied my calf but today she broke her collar and had to be put in a gain.
A good day. Ben & Jim finished stripping Bens cureing of tobacco. Ben & Henry and Fannie went to Kate Harveys tonight. Jim tied my calf for me today. Denia come to see Josie this evening. Hattie Gilbert washed here today. Alcie Collans made some soap today. Bettie ironed most of the day. I got dinner. We had some nice beef. Henry caught a rabbit in his trap this morning. Nellie finished Carries babys cloak today.
A good day cloudy part of the day. Jim stripped tobacco this morning. Nellie tied. Ben & Henry went to Kates and got some tobacco and put it in the pit. Jim come but would not stay and eat dinner. Thsi evening Ben carried Betty part of the way home. I went as far as Cedar Forest. I fished some. Caught three small fish. Mr Power sent Josie some birds ready to cook. I am glad of them to give her. Fanny Power has gone to Mrs Grave.. to night. Mr Orval Gravely[?] come for her.
A good day. Jim & Ben stripped a little tobacco this morning. This evening they went to Gretna. Ben went for Fanny today. Nellie washed the dishes & churned. Then she sewed some. Kate Harvey come to see Josie to day. The children went to school. Will not go any more until Monday. Several of the neighbors killed hogs today. Josie has not suffered so much today as she did yesterday. Ben & Jim went to the barns tonight to tie tobacco.
A good day. Ben & Mr Booker put their tobacco on the waggon and started to Gretna a bout 10 oclock. Nellie & Henry has gone to Mr Bookers to stay until he comes home. Jim is tying tobacco by him self. Nellie tied tobacco this evening. I got dinner. Nellie sewed a little this morning. I starched the clothes. This evening Mabel and I [shelled?] some corn. This evening I started a letter to Effie Brumfield. Jamie Gravely stopped to see Josie this morning. Edna got a letter from Virginia Wooding today.
A good day. Some frost this morning. Not enough to kill things. Jim stripped tobacco. John plowed. Ben went to the Island for gu[a]no. Mr Mills worked on the road by here. He worked on it all day in sight of the house. Nellie got a letter from Evylin to day. I have fixed some rowes in the garden and planted some onions. I could of waited and they would of plowed the land for me but I would not wait. I planted them last year and they made the finest that we every made. The men folks are tying tobacco thnight. Preaching is going on at Strait Stone.
