CONVICTS ESCAPED.

Fourteen Prisioners Gain Liberty at Folsom.

Fourteen prisioners made a break at Folsom between 7 and 8 o'clock Monday morning taking with them Warden Wilkerson, his grandson, Harry Wilkerson, captain of the guard Murphy and two other officers. Guard Cotter was mortally wounded by one of the prisioners. Nearly all the sheriff's force and county constabulary are searching for the prisioners who secured a number of rifles and amunition from the prison armory before they left the prison. Company H. of the National Guard, which is the Placerville company, commanded by Captain Charles A. Swisler, has been called out and is now forming at the armory to await such orders as may be received.

CONVINCTS FOUND AND BATTLE ENSUES

One Killed, One Wounded and Balance Escape. No Officers Injured. The Chase Continues and Hundreds Are in Pursuit

PLACERVILLE, Cal., July 27. -- A party of escaped convicts was overtaken by the officers near Pilot Hill at 7 o'clock to-night and a fight ensued. Convict Howard was killed and a negro named Seavis wounded. Two more of the party took to the woods. None of the officers were hurt. They were not strong enough to effect a capture. The pursuit continues. A company of militia at this place is on the trail in company with half a hundred deputies from five counties.

HISTORY OF SIX DAYS' MAN HUNT AFTER CONVICTS.

July 27. -- Thirteen convicts break from Folsom prison and take officials as hostages. In encounter one guard is badly cut and others injured. One convict slain, one fatally wounded. One wounded.

July 28. -- Battle at Pilot Hill between posse and escapes. Convict J. J. Allison wounded and commits suicide. Two wounded.

July 29. -- Fugitive convicts elnde man-hunters and hiding place unknown. Posses gather at Cool and hope to corral escapes but do not succeed.

July 30. -- Sheriff's posse locates five convicts near Weber creek and expect a battle, but during the night convicts slip away.

July 31. -- Militia weary of useless campaigning ordered home by the Governor and jealousies among posses dishearten man-hunters.

August 1. -- Little boy meets five convicts near Placerville and gives the alarm. Soldiers recently home at Placerville start in pursuit and battle follows.
