Wolf River:Gooch

Tuesday, December 1st

Horrors; found left stereochannel had dropped out during yesterday’s recording of side two. Used most of morning trying again + hoping for the best till it was over + I could test it...Eureka: it worked! I now have a superb 90-min. tape of Kindertotenlieder+ Das Lied von der Erde, replacing the old 120-min Katter-Karajon version, which also has the five rucker songs on it.

Wolf River dinner, Robert Gooch host, Artful Partners the book. Slept fitfully after a too-hearty meal—porkloin, sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, pecan pie, white wine, brandy.Haircut after lunch.

Wednesday, December 2nd

Police officer Ferguson came by for me to autograph a Vol. I for his son. Video Magic; got a cassette of an Irons-de Niro film about 1750 South America; overdone + dull, though it could have been much better with a different direction. Library; returned Mahler records. Took out a three-cassette XXXX recording of The Great Gatsby to play during the ride to Ochsner next week. Seessel’s; got two large strip sirloins; plus two potatoes, for our stay at home Thursday night-out dinner. Cooked them, French frying the potatoes, along with green peas + a bottle of Lascombes 1978. All superb.

Dental Apptment 4p.m.

Thursday, December 3rd

Dental appointment set; all reasonably sound, thank God, though probably not for long. My job is to hope my teeth outlast me. Skipped walk again. Read various background works on Conrad, particularly Nostromo, next month’s Wolf selection. All interesting.

Friday, December 4th

Received in mail from Bob Loomis, Rock & Hawk, anew selection of Robinson Jeffers’ shorter poems. Enjoyed reading them—especially the last ten or so, which came from later collections. I missed when they came out. Walked 2.5 miles in 40 mins; played side two of the Mahler tape, the final four poems of “Das Lied von der Erde.”
