Middle part takin [TOOK IN] sail as yousoul [USUAL]. Latter part maid [MADE] all sail again. Stering [STEERING] SW. At 7 AM raised a shole [SHOAL] of whales. Loward [LOWERED] and chaist [CHASED]. Got on to one and mist [MISSED] him. Got on to anumber [ANOTHER] finely [FINALLY]. Struck and got stoved. One man badly hurt. So ends this hard day with the los [LOSS] of a line. Latitude by obs vation [OBSERVATION] 2°-35 So [SOUTH] Long [LONGITUDE] by Cronometer [CHRONOMETER] 106°=15 W

Sttering [STEERING] various coarses [COURSES]. Middle part tok [TOOK] in light sails as yousial [USUAL], heading both way[S] on the wind thrugh [THROUGH] the night. Latter part maid [MADE] all sail again. Steering S.S.W. with all sail. Hands imployed [EMPLOYED] in coiling to [TOW] lines and filing a new [???]. At 9 AM saw whales. Loward [LOWERED] and chaist [CHASED] but they proved to bea [BE] finbacks. Nothing more worth of remark.
