Cruising for whales on the [illegible]
69 Thursday the 2ond Oct 1834
Began with light breezes SSE.
Ship under all sail. Steering E by
the wind. Saw sevarel [several] hump backs
but no whales. at 10 AM passed
a ship a [butting?]. At 11 tacked ship
to the SW ward. Obsd Lat 35:59
Long 23:15. Middle and latter part
fresh breezes. At 4 PM tacked to the
E ward. At 6 raised a whale.
Lored [lowered] and chased but without success.
At 7 oclok [o'clock] double reefed our top
sails and stand [illegible] watches. Tack every
two hours. So remains all well.

70 Friday the 3 thd
70 days out took our first wright [right] whale [written in the side margin]
Light airs throughout the [sentence unfinished]. At day light
in the morning set all possible
sail and steered Sth with our
larboard tanks on board. Soon raised
a whale which we killed and cut
in. Parted our finn chain but
received no damag [damage] Obsd Lat 36:16
Longitude 23:21. At 6 hours past
the Meridian finished butting.
Saw an other whale. Lored [lowered] and chased
but with out success. Came a long
side and took up our bouts and began
to boil. Nothing more occured.
So remains all well.
