Only on large creek (Eli) flows east into the ocean, but there are many small streams and innumerable soakages , though no small creeks occur north of a point six miles south of Indian Head.

USC60_0009
Along the ocean frontage the slopes carry stunted timber as a rule, but there are notable exceptions to this, including the rich scrub of Eli Creek, several miles inland. Close to the shore many of the slopes carry undergrowth, Pandanus etc. Grey Ironbark of poor development occurs on the eastern slopes, but nowhere else. The dense scrubs are predominantly of Carrol, but only very small areas of rich vine scrubs occur similar to those on the mainland.

A few place names of the island previously not mentioned are worth recording, but memory serves me ill and many more are known to some authorities on the subject.

Garawonga - Place of Pidgeons
Boomigen - Deep Waters
Bogimbah - Home of Homeland
Eurong - Place of camps
Eli (Eliah) - Dirt Creek

7.2.3. Two lease applications (SML's 127and
129) are located each side of Eli Creek. These would provide the basis for a very extensive mining operation around Eli Creek.

FIDO embarked on a very expensive and very deliberate project of constructing a boardwalk along Eli Creek to protect this fragile environment which was becoming rapidly degraded and to shame a reluctant and hostile Queensland Government into taking an active role in management of this world treasure.

For the children, there is freshwater swimming in the creeks and lakes as well as the surf. Eli Creek near Happy Valley is a constant attraction. Sand, surf and unspoilt charm have drawn tourists to Fraser Island in an increading stream over the last decade.

Homeward on this occasion, we stopped for lunch at Eli Creek, flowing clear and strong. Along its foreshore was FIDO's construction of a timber walkway, assuring visitors that this organization is serious in their intentions to help to control erosion. We observed many areas showing signs of overwear, evidence of being 'loved to death' by tourists.
