Professor Sydney Jackson, who with some of the directors will shortly visit Fraser Island, has patented a method for the cultivation of the pearl and table oyster, which it is proposed to put in operation in Hervey's Bay and the straits. He appears to be sanguine that the pearl oyster can be brought down from Torres Straits and successfully introduced to our waters.

...Our bay waters abound with edible fish of all kinds, and are already famed for their oysters, while a vast area of Fraser Is. should be ideal land for the growth of sisal hemp. The introduction of the pearl oyster is an experiment well worthy of a trial, and, seeing how well the common oyster does here, there seems no good reason why the pearl oyster should not thrive in the deeper waters of the bay. The career of the company will be watched with keen and sympathetic interest."

Fraser Island forms Hervey Bay (named by Cook on 21st May, 1770, after Captain Hervey) and "Great Sandy Strait," which is 28 miles in length from Inskip Point to the mouth of the Mary River.

USC60_0001
From Moon Point the island sweeps north-easterly to form the deep waters of Platypus Bay, forming the eastern part of the 45 mile wide Hervey Bay, in which the Navy carries out manoeuvres and whose western limit is Burnett Heads.

USC60_0008
The tides flow strongly in two directions through the Strait, the great mouth of Hervey Bay acting in a measure like the Bay of Fundy, narrowed to seven miles between Urangan and Moon Point, to give rises of up to about eleven feet near the Moon Boom Islands, where they meet the ,water forced through the ¾ mile wide entrance of Wide Bay Harbour.

1.1.2. Marine areas:
All of Hervey Bay, Great Sandy Strait and Tin Can Bay
---
1.1.4. Protected estuarine areas adjoining Hervey Bay, Great Sandy Strait and Tin Can Bay:
The Burrum River, Beelbi Creek and Susan River Fisheries Habitat Reserves.

USC91_0005
The marine areas should be given strict protection to preserve the values. Almost half of Hervey Bay is Marine Park, and about half of the estuarine areas of Great Sandy Strait and Tin Can Bay are already protected with the much stronger protection of Fisheries Habitat Reserve. These reserves should be extended and in some cases even greater protection provided such as National Park status over marine areas.

Fraser Island forms the eastern side of Hervey Bay, sheltering the bay and the false delta of the Mary River from the prevailing strong south easterly trade winds and providing safe small boating under ideal conditions.
---
In the lee of the island fronting Hervey Bay sheltered beaches run from over forty miles north from Moon Point. South of Moon Point the tidal wetlands provide a rich nursery for the healthy fishing industry of Hervey Bay, as well as loading points for the abundant timber harvest.

Flinders was the next recorded white man to visit Fraser Island. In 1799 he sailed the "Norfolk" into Hervey Bay and named some of the western features including Triangle Cliffs, the coloured sands of Arch Cliffs and White Cliffs.

Apparently the Chronicle hasn't yet realised that no matter how often Premier Joh says that he can safely drill for oil near the Great Barrier Reef 74% of Queenslanders don't believe him. It also ignores that 77% of Hervey Bay voters elected FIDO Vice President Ronda Cook to the Hervey Bay Town Council.

Route
Section 1 of the route from Lake Garawongera to Hidden Lake would be approximately 15 kilometres in length. Lake Garawongera was chosen as the starting point because its ease of access. Hikers can either hike there from Happy Valley village or from any point south or west and because it already has basic facilities there which could be used by hikers such as toilets, reticulated water and cooking shelters be dropped off there. Alternatively they can be dropped off there by Top Tours, which runs a daily service there from Hervey Bay.

This project will not be eligible for funding without the support of the Hervey Bay City Council.
