Description

USC22_0003
The tides meet midway between "Stewart Island" and the south "White Cliffs."
Probably the first white men who ever passed through this strait were Andrew Petrie's whaleboat party in search of "Duramboi," in 1842; and the first navigator was Lieutenant Dayman, of the "Asp" a small vessel attached to the "Rattlesnake," in 1848.

USC281_0004
In 1847 Lt. Dayman, in the tiny "Asp", sailed right through Sandy Strait.
