These lakes are so close together that I had to zig- -zag about a good deal when I was building the 60-mile telegraph-line to Sandy Cape Lighthouse in 1885. No timber or anyting else of use or value is here.

Flinders proceeded, landed three parties at Sandy Cape near where Sandy Cape lighthouse stands. One party collected firewood, another party of six naturalists under botanist Brown studied the flora whilst Flinders befriended the aboriginals whom he considered extremely numerous and of good physique.

There was a radar station near the Sandy Cape Lighthouse. During the 1970's the isolation of the Top End has been broken down - a little to the chagrin of the light keepers who enjoyed the quiet serenity of the lofty, remote homes. The first inroads came with the sandmining leases.

Stage 3 is in the more remote area between the Wathumba Road and Sandy Cape. Because of the zoning it is not proposed to do more than define a route through this area which would involve going from to Ocean Lake and then to Lake Wanhar and then following an old (now largely overgrown) mineral exploration track north west to the Sandy Cape Lighthouse.
