In the rattling, bounding, parky Model T Ford, or in a modern motor truck the 38 mile run along the beach from Eurong Road to Indian Head can prove really thrilling, and to take undue risks and be caught by a great ocean roller whilst rounding rocks can easily spoil the trip and damage the motor.

USC60_0012
The tramline routes of bygone years are easily recognisable by their form and grade, and are now used as roads, but it is hard to recognise the engine sheds at Eurong Creek under nature's shielding mantle of grass, lantana and tree growth.

Eurong - Place of camps

USC179_0005
There was a big camping area near the beach, just south of the Wabby Lakes area and then at Eurong there wasa pretty big place there, and that's where the aboriginals used to ride old Aldridge's horses. They used to break the horses in. There must still be some old posts there yet. The aboriginals used to say had plenty of busters there. It was at Eurong that old Nugget had a hut. He used to camp there. Sometimes he would stay at the camp at Eurong and sometimes he would come back to camp at Louisa's with us.

S.J.: No, pretty well on.. not far off the beach. And then Eurong there was always a pretty big place. That's where the Aboriginals used to ride old Aldriges horses. Break the horses in there. At Eurong. There must be some old posts there yet??
John: There are, still
S.J.: There is, eh?
John: They call it the horse paddock. Even I, as a boy, have been told that that was the horse paddock.
S.J.: Anyhow, one the left hand side as you went out, that's where they had the stockyard. That's where they used to ride the young horses. The niggers. They'd say, plenty of buster there, they'd say.
John: Ike tells me that when he started going to Eurong in 1931, there was stumps of the house there.
S.J.: Yes, a little hut. Nugget had a hut there. He always lived there. Camped there.
---
John: Can you tell me anything abuout the are, south of Eurong, where Nugget had pointed out to you as being, what he called the "christening ring".
S.J.: Yes, well that's just north of Gairoway Creek (?????). Inside there...they tell me it's grown up a lot. Well, there's flat country in there a bit, and that's where old Nugget said that "christening ring" was.
John: You used to see it?
S.J.: Yes, we saw it then. You could see it those days.
John: How big?
S.J.: Oh well, I suppose 100 yards diameter.
John: North of..
S.J.: First Creek from Eurong. Gairoway they called it, the niggers did. Gairoway Creek (?????).

USC184_0004
John: Boobigen? And you said that was the creek, and I thought you told me that there was a christening ring near there? Near the mouth of that little Bridge Creek?
S.J.: No, up further. John: Closer to Eurong?
S.J.: Closer to Eurong. Where that first creek comes out. The creeks might have changed you see, since I was there. John: Yes, the creeks have changed. First Creek had three mouths in the last five years. It changes quite a lot.
S.J.: Oh, what a difference it makes now. It never changed when we were there. First, Second, Third, Fourth. John: Yes. There is a big hill called..
S.J.: One Tree Hill? John: No, that was north of Eurong. There's another big...
S.J.: No, the south side of Eurong.
John: Yes, back near the mouth of First Creek.

John Is there any area, that you would say, that you know, that was very, very pretty? On Fraser Island?
S.J. Oh, yes, Well, I don't know. I couldn't says that there was anything ugly about it really. The southern end was more grass country, you know, like that. I always liked all along Eurong and that there, and the back beach.

In 1915 we moved from Deepuying (which is the aboriginal name for the White Cheeked Honey- eater) to Orange Tree Camp. It was from here that the tramline had been laid to Eurong Scrub. It had the same type of buildings as Deepuying but a house was built by early '16. We got more horses - some draughts. Dad bought a buggy and the transport problem had improved considerably.

A nursery was formed and built with a slab roof of split Piccabeen Palm hauled down from Eurong Scrub.

The Eurong Road as we know it now, where the tourist traffic comes across from Eurong Beach to Central and down to the coast, the inside coast, was a bullock team road. It was made by the bullockies when they cut the timber in the Eurong Scrub.
---
The tramline went as far as Central Station to begin
with, through the Eurong scrub.

Talking of the buggy at night, returning from Indian Head, Dad, Brother, Moncher and myself, brother and I riding, Dad driving buggy - the night was so dark coming through Eurong Scrub and and the track was not over wide - I was riding a grey mare and Tom was wearing a white shirt, by riding one on each wheel track directly in front of the buggy and because the horses were both dark coloured and not discernible in the dark, Dad could see my horse and Tom's shirt and so keep a safe course.

...for the plantations. A cutting 'round the hill along the high bank of Woongoolbver Creek was cut with axes and shovels. It is still in use. The Woongoolbver-Eurong road across the Island would be the best grade wise crossing of the Island, I think.

Herb Heisler had a team snigging and carting to tramline, McKenzies and Tallowood. Bill Jarvis had a team working in Eurong. When I remember, he also pulled all stumps on Forest Station clearing.

When riding along the ocean beach as we frequently did travelling from Eurong to Bowarrady or to Indian Head it was commonplace to have ten or more dingoes following. Fresh ones joined and others dropped out as they reached their territory boundaries. (Dingoes travel great distances when necessary. In the west I have known them to travel 40 miles to and from water).

Aldridge was in partnership with George Dicken who ran a horse and cattle concern called the Fraser Island Run, at Grouyeah, near Eurong on the eastern side of the island. Dicken bred Clydesdales.

Call for Volunteers: Last year volunteers made an amazing contribution to Fraser Island coordinating contributing 10 volunteer weeks. Six of them addressed weed problems in Happy Valley and Eurong and four worked on the George Haddock Track and infrastructure. For the remainder of 2015 FIDO is proposing another six working bees on weeds in Happy Valley and Eurong. FIDO is now seeking volunteers for this work, so vital if the natural integrity of K’Gari is to be preserved.
