Dr. Sir,

I am directed by the unaimous voice of the State Central Com. to extend a coridal and earnest invitation to you to visit our state and participate in the present political campaign, so novel in many of its features.

You are not unacquainted with the history of the legislation of our state for the past two years, ant it must have been specially gratifying to you to witness the progress which your race has been steadily making towards the enjoyment of political rights. Born and reared myself where such rights were never withheld -- in the noble free state of Vermont -- I have watched anxiously, and worked as God has given me the power in the official position which I have occupied (confidentail secretary to Gov. Brownlow) to that end, and now that our efforts have been so nearly crowned with sucess we want you, the time honored champion of a race, to come here and help us perfect the work. You can reach your people better than any of us, and your voice will be a mighty power in enlightening and directing them in the new patch upon which they have entered.

You have no fear. Free discusion is at length an acomplished act in Tenn. You shall speak anywhere from Carter Co. to Memphis and to none other is it given to wield the influence for good that you can. Please write me what time will be convienient for you to come and how long you can labor with us.
