South Carolina, had it not been for the migra-
tion of vigorous young men from the poor and
middle classes of the North. The schools of
the South have been taught from the beginning
by Yankee school masters, who have "made a
raise" as pedagogues, and stepped into the
professions or the proprietorship of plantations.
In this easy adaptation to Southern society,
we have got to hear of them being troubled
by scruples of conscience. I believe nearly all
the moving spirits of the South, were originally

rights and duties of men; while they at the
South trample Liberty under foot, or at the
North, rob every poor man and woman of the
natural right to the bounties of Providence,
without which neither life can be sustained, lib-
erty enjoyed, nor happiness pursued. Land
monopoly was the first outrage against human-
