Note: The copy of the salesman's dummy at the Rush Rhees Library, University of Rochester, includes the same 1882 title page. At its back in the salesperson's hand are listed the types of bindings requested by those who have placed orders. They are cloth or leather with trimmed edges that are gilded, 'sprinkled' or plain.

B2a. Second American Edition, Second Printing, First Issue           Hartford, Conn.: Park Publishing Company, et al., 1882.

The same as the first printing, binding B, except for the title page, line 3, 'DOUGLASS' (no comma after 'DOUGLASS'); signed only on the first leaf in gathering 13. White wove paper varies in thickness from .004+" to .005 +", sheets bulk 1  1/2". Mispagination of pp. [1] through 17 is uncorrected. The title leaf is integral.

Same as the first issue except for the title page, lines 28-30: 'HAMILTON REWELL & CO., CLEVELAND, O., WALKER & DAIGNEAU, BATTLE│CREEK, MICH.; PHILLIPS & HUNT. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.│1884.'. The title leaf is a cancel and identical to the integral title leaf in the fourth printing.

B2c. Second American Edition, Second Printing, Third Issue           Hartford, Conn.: Park Publishing Company, 1888

Same as the second issue except for title page, 28 lines instead of 30, lines 26-28; 'HARTFORD. CONN.; PARK PUBLISHING CO.│1888.'. The title leaf is a cancel.

Binding B: Olive brown calico blind-, black-, and gold-stamped. Front: blackstamped except as noted, a floral figure within each corner of a double-rule box; four lines at center, ' LIFE AND TIMES│OF ['F' within 'O']│[gold-stamped female and eagle figures]│FREDERICK DOUGLASS'. Back: blank-stamped doublerule box with floral figures inside the upper and lower right corners, at center the same female and eagle figures as on the front. Spine: 11 gold-stamped lines, '[single row of crosses and stars] : LIFE│AND│TIMES│OF│FRED'K DOUGLASS [single rule dotted at both ends]│ILLUSTRATED│PPC [letters intertwined]│ [single row of crosses and stars]'. Edges trimmed. 7  27/32" X 5". White wove end papers at front and back.

Same as the first issue, binding B, except the title leaf is a cancel. Title page is newly typeset, and its text is the same as that of the first printing of the first American edition (29 lines and lines 9-22 are arranged in two sections of progressively more narrow widths) except for: line 1, ' LIFE AND TIMES' is in bold face; line 3, no comma following 'DOUGLASS'; lines 18-19, "APPOINT- MENT'; and lines 27-29: 'CLEVELAND, O.;│HAMILTON, REWELL & CO. I883.' (No reference to Park Publishing Co.) Copyright page: two lines, 'COPYRIGHT, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.'. Edges trimmed and gilded, 7  13/16" X 5  1/16".

The mispagination in the first gatherings of the first and second printings (corrected in the third printing) is present again: [1-5] 6-15 [16] [16a-16b] 17-24, the recto of the frontispiece leaf counting as the first page and the illustrations list appearing on [16a].

As in the third printing, first issue, of the second American edition, there no mispagination between pp. 16 and 17. See Note.

Collation: [1-47]8; signed as in the second American edition, first printing, except: signature 6 is not present; there is no second signature 13; and none follows signature 25 (p. 609) since none of the "Part III" gatherings is signed.

Contents: The table of contents, pp. [3]-15, is expanded to include the 'THIRD PART', the text of which appears on pp. 619-752. The list of illustrations (including the frontispiece in its count) cites 11 rather than the 18 in previous printings of the first and second American editions. Present, excluding the frontispiece, are 14 plates. In addition to those listed, tipped-in are: 'Whipping of Old Barney', 'Gore Shooting Denby', 'Mrs. Auld Teaching Him to Read', 'Found in the Woods by Sandy', 'Driven to Jail for Running Away', 'At the Wharf in Newport', and 'Fighting the Mob in Indiana'. Listed but not present are: 'Portrait of John Brown', 'Portrait of William Lloyd Garrison', and 'Portrait of Abraham Lincoln'. See Note.

Typography and Paper: Typepage width varies from that of previous pages on pp. 619-752, 3  1/2" rather than 3  9/16". Running heads in 'THIRD PART' appear on the first pages of chapters as well as the remaining pages. White wove paper .003"+ thick, sheets bulk 1  1/4".

Binding A: Dark blue calico. Front and back: blank. Spine: nine lines gold-stamped, 'LIFE AND TIMES│OF│FREDERICK│DOUGLASS│[triangle]│ILLUSTRATED BOSTON│DE WOLFE FISKE│[bullet] & CO [bullet]'. Edges trimmed and top edges gilded. 7  3/4" X 5  1/4", striped head-bands at top and bottom. White wove end papers.

Binding B: Same as binding A but dark red calico.

Publication: Listed in Publisher's Weekly, 42 (December 10, 1892), 1052, at $2.50 in cloth binding only. Like numerous other volumes listed in this issue, its entry describes it as an "1893 [1892]" publication.

Note: Mixed sheets: as in the second printing of the expanded edition, no page number appears on p. [16] of the Rush Rhees Library's copy, and it does not list the book's illustrations.

BX2. Expanded Second American Edition, Second Printing            Boston: De Wolfe, Fiske & Co., 1895

Same as the first printing except: title page, line 29, '1895.'; page number for p. [16] is not present, nor is signature 24. The list of illustrations cites 18, including the frontispiece portrait, rather than 11, and present are 17 plates; but 'Portrait of Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe' (photograph) replaces 'Portrait of John Brown'; 'Portrait of William Lloyd Garrison' is no longer an engraving but a photograph; and "Abraham Lincoln" (listed as 'Portrait of Abraham Lincoln' in the first printing of the expanded second American edition) is derived from a photograph rather than an engraving. White wove paper, .004" thick, sheets bulk 1  3/8".
