Dear Father,
Yours of the 20th inst. was received this morning, bearing intelligence of the death of Mrs. J. W. Soguess.
Considerable excitement just now regarding the removal of General Howard; but as yet nothing definite is yet known. The match game with the Pythians takes place on the 29th inst. one week from today. The notice in the paper was a mistake, stating that we would play on the 26th instead of the 29th.
The baby grows very rapidly and looks better every day.

EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM FREDERICK DOUGLASS.
ROCHESTER, January 16, 1868.
DEAR MISS HOLLEY: You may pledge me for fifty dollars in support of THE STANDARD for the present year. * * * THE STANDARD never did a better work than during the last three years, and was never more needed than now. Let it continue to "pour the living coals of truth on the nation's naked heart."
Yours truly, FREDERICK DOUGLASS.
