Chittenden House

The Chittenden House was built in 1826
from material left over from the
first Capitol building of Florida.
This is the center section of our
present Capitol. The windows are the
same size as the Capitol windows.
The house was remodeled in 1903 by
the Chittenden family. That is when
the second story was added.

Mr. Francis H. Flagg moved
to Tallahassee in 1846 from
Massachusetts and bought
the house. He had married a
Southern girl and they had
five daughters - one of them is
the present Mrs. Chittenden.

The rock wall around the
house was built by Mrs.
Chittenden's father-in-law.
He had the rocks hauled to
Tallahassee from Carrabelle. They
were used as balast in
ships that came to Carrabelle
from England, Ireland and
