Radio Station WTNT. Oct. 5, 1950. 6:50 P.M.

1. Mrs. Moor, will you explain to us what this will mean to us as citizens of this community?

1. Ans. Yes, Mrs. Hamilton [strike] Berta. As you said, some of us feel that a program of this kind is long overdue in Tallahassee, and other communities too, for that matter. We all accept our freedom so casusally and we have done this for so long that our freedom and free institutions are on the defensive. We, as Americans, are so afraid that we will have to give up some of our luxeries, to sacrifice a little of our comforts, that we have closed our eyes and ears xx and even our hearts to the wide spread propogranda and real advances and inroads of Communism throughout the world. Our freedom was bought dearly by our forefathers and the time has come when we, as Americans must do something to keep that freedom. Of course we have made mistakes and we have been indifferent, but it is not too late for us to "right about face" and try to make freedom a vital force in the life of our community. "Only a dynamic and resurgent democracy here in America can commend our way of life to the depressed hundreds of millions who are trying to make up their minds between the ideological offerings of the East and the West. But we cannot have a dynamic and resurgent freedom in America without far greater vitality in the life of our local communities." (Melby).

2. Isn't Tallahassee the first Club in the nation to start such a program?

2. Ans. Well, as far as I know it is the first Women's Club to have a complete program of education, planned for the entire year, for the definite purpose of teaching and refreshing xxx citizens in every walk of life, about our Democracy. The best way to fight Communism is to teach our citizens and young people to love our Democracy, and one can't love deeply the things he doesn't understand. These ideals and ideas, of course, have been promoted by our Women's Club leaders, and the national leaders have plead with us to practice our way of life, teach it by example and many other ways, but we believe that the only way for us to really learn effectively xx is to have a planned program and have xxxxxxxx a cross-section of our citizens participate. I, for one, need refreshing on our American History.

3. Will you give me an idea of the planned program and some of the speakers you will have to carry it out?

3. Ans. Mrs. Hamilton [strike] Berta, I will do this with pleasure. But first I must give credit where credit is due. The idea and program was conceived by Mrs. Ernest Ekermeyer, who is chairman of the Americanization Division of the Citizenship committee. She told me this morning that she got such an inspiration from talking to the people she asked to be on our program. She has spent hours in making appointments and having conferences with these busy people and all of them agree that such a program is needed and should be far-reaching. Would you like me to go a little into detail about the subjects? Well, our first meeting will be in the Woman's club building the last Monday in October at 8 o'clock. You see we want the busy men and working people to come too. So we set the time for evening. Every month during the year except December, we will have the program on the last Monday evening. The first meeting will be on the background of America, giving the reasons for coming, just what our forebears were seeking, to come to a new country where theyx qould have political and religous freedoms, etc. then find out what really constitutes a Denocracy. Do you know the difference between a direct and an indirect democracy? What are the articles of Confederation and a dozen other things which we, as good citizens, should know and undertand. Then in November we plan a program about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In January we will have a background of our own Florida history, in February we plan Florida Government and Constitution. In March we take up the Dangers to our American Citizenship from within and without. (You know, Mrs. Hamilton [strike] Berta, I sometimes think that more of our dangers come from within than from without,) our country.) In April we plan to teach how we can be more effective citizens in our Republic. Then, finally, in

May we have planned Citizenship Recogniztion Day, where citizens who have come of voting age and the Naturalized citizens will be honored.

Our list of speakers is very imposing. We have such people as Dr. Campbell, who will open and introduce the forum after the first meeting, (By the way there will be a forum and question peoiod after each program), Dr. Wyemouth T. Jordan, who teaches American History at the University, Reverend Stell of [strike] the [strike] Presbyterian [strike] Church [strike] , Judge Ellwyn Thomas, of [strike] the [strike] Supreme [strike] Court, Senator LeRoy Collins, Dr. Mark Boyd, Dr. Charles Davis of the University, (I just found out that he is a nephew of the late Honorable P.K. Yonge, who was for so many years chairman of our State Board of Control), Cheif Justice Alto Adams, of [strike] the [strike] Supreme [strike] Court [strike], Judge Sebring, Dr. Claude Flory, of [strike] the [strike] U. [strike], Honorable Millard Caldwell, ex-governor [strike] of [strike] Florida [strike], also [strike], ex-congressman [strike], from [strike], the [strike], 3rd [strike] District [strike] , at [strike] present [strike] chairman [strike] of [strike] the [strike] Regional [strike] Education [strike] committee [strike] of [strike] the [strike] Southeast [strike], Miss Daisy Parker of the University faculty, Mrs. Harold Richards who will conduct this forum, and Judge Devane, our federal judge who lives in Tallahassee. With that group, we can really get some facts and information about our country.

4. Who do you wish to attend these programs, Mrs. Moor? And why do you plan to have them at this particular time?

We want every body interested in our "American Way of Life" to come. We want every age group to participate. We want the program to tbe so simple that even a child can understand it. In fact, we hope that there will be only standing room in the Club house on these nights. Lets make it an answer to Communistic aggression right here in our own community. If every community would study, learn, and ACT, then we would have no fear of Communism. But we must keep the program at community level. We hope to have an educational enterprise with lay and professional individuals and groups welded into working teams for freedom. This is something which will mean a great deal to our boys in Korea and on foreign soil throughout the world, because America is waking up, we hope, to the need of selling Democracy instead of Communism to the world.
