Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 1999 Florida Inaugural Ceremonies!

As we stand at the threshold of a new century, Frank Brogan and I are honored by the opportunity we have been given. With your support we can transform Florida in the next century into a state known for its compassion as much as its grandure; for limitless potential offered each citizen.

With the power of ideas and the will of committed and caring people, we can build a public education system with better schools, proud parents and involved students; we can build a criminal justice system that keeps criminals behind bars and off our streets; and we can build a government that takes less income from — and provides more opportunity for — each and every Florida family.

To do this we must never forget that Florida's greatest strength is the wisdom, courage and spirit of her people. Government's proper role is to act as a catalyst to unleash the amazing human spirit that has made our state and nation great.

Today is a new beginning, not the final destination. On this day we begin an exciting journey into a future for Florida filled with hope, optimism, and opportunity for all.

Columba and I, along with Frank and Mary, thank you once again for joining us today as we begin this journey together.
