& a swell from the eastward. At
midnight altered our course
in order to make the island
of Sal. At 1/2 past 5 saw the
island bearing west by north about 3 leagues.
Bent our cables. I make Sal
to lye in the latitude of
16" 42. N. & longitude W. from
the Lizard 16° W. & by a good
observation I make the southermost
hummocks on Bona Vista to
lye in the latitude of 16°. 7' N.
longitude from Lizard 16°. 3' W.

Course is S. 2° E. 160.

At noon the southermost hummocks
on Bona Vista bore E. 5 leagues.

The first part fresh gales with
clear weather, the latter part
sometime a small gale. At 9 p.m.
brought too for St. Iago. At 11 saw it
bearing from the southwest to the south by west
3 leagues. Stode on & off with our
topsailes till 4 a.m. then made saile
at 6. the southermost point of the isle of
May bore east by south 7 leagues & St. Iago from the southwest
to southeast by south distance off shore 2 leagues at
1/2 past 11. a.m. anchored in Porta
Praya road in 8 1/2 fathoms with our
best bower that fort bore NW. 1/2 N.
The Easternmost point E. 1/2 S. Moored
ship. Found here the Peace, the
Lyon, the Eagle, the Tyger.
They have been here there 5
days.

Friday March 29 1726

Fresh gales in the morning and more
moderate in the evening, the other ships
having sent their longboats to help us to
fill our water, sent all our empty water casks
ashore to be filled, received on bord 7 cowes, some
hoggs, fowles & other refreshments; sent
on bord the Lyon captain Larmus, one cable &
a small bale mark't P. S.

& sett up our rigging. The Commodore
made a signal to unmoore
at 5 unmoored & hove short
at 8 hoisted in our longboat at
11. weighed & run out, then lay too
untill the Commodore got in
his boats. At 12. the southernmost point
of port of Praya bore N. W. 1/2 W.
distance 5 miles from whence
I shall take my departure
allowing the lattitude 14. 55 N.
