[Letterhead from the WAR DEPARTMENT] AIR SERVICE FLYING SCHOOL SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Rockwell Field San Diego, Cal October 9th, 1918
Dear Friend Alice:
Pretty brown eyes. Well, what are you doing today? That is what you can tell me when you write again.
I think I missed a very nice time when I first failed to receive the letter with the ticket and then was sent away before the time for the entertainment.
Tell your mama that I thank her very much for her thoughtfulness in sending it to me. 7:30 PM and down at the new Y.M.C.A, I came down to finish writing a few letters, but all the places for writing are occupied so I am using the arm of a rocking chair for a desk.
We will have moving pictures in a little while. This p.m. we had inspection. I have been transferred to Squadron B and the new C.O. is a stiff disciplinarian. We certainly have to walk the chalk line.
I am sending you some of the pictures you have waited so long to see.
I hope you are having a good time at school and getting good marks.
It takes a lot of hard work for a little girl to grow into the right sort of big girl and, some day, I hope to see what fine young ladies my little girls can grow up to be.
Your soldier friend, Fred C. Sampson
