Dear Alice: I received your letter this morning (Sunday) which I had been looking forwarded, [sic], to for serval, [sic], weeks. I was told that I have been restricted over Sunday because I had a dirty, [bayonet ?], and did not pass the Saturday inspection, but my name hasn't been posted on the board. I think the sgt. wanted to just scare me. I hope you have received the small birthday present, listen birthday present

it is so far behind your birthday but, just the same, it was sent with the greetings that you had a happy birthday. The tenth of this month, Holderbaum got a telegram that his Mother had died the night before. I felt sorry for him because I know how I would feel if some of my people died, especially a Mother who loves you the most. I suppose you will soon start to go to school again. I often wish I could go though, [sic], my school days again. I remember once when I was in the fourth grade, the teacher told the pupils that, right at that time, was the best part of our lives. I didn't believe it then, but since then, have found out that she spoke the truth. I don't know what a vacation means since coming, [sic], in the Army. I can iminage, [sic], what a good time you are having, camping out by the lake. You may send the place where, [sic], you were camping to me so I can enjoy it.
