Pot Pourre Preserved rose leaves

Put in stone jar 1/2 pk. fresh rose leaves. 3 handfuls of rose leaves to 1 of fine table salt. Strew, first, the salt, then the leaves, till all are used, covering with salt last. Let it remain for five days, stirring & turning twice a day. Then add 3 oz. coarsely powdered al spice [sic], 1 oz bruised stick cinnamon. This forms the stock. Let it remain a wk., turning from top to bottom, then put into permanent jar 1 oz of all spice [sic], adding the stock, 1 layer by layer, sprinkling

between the following mixture: 3 oz orris root (sliced thin), 1/4 oz Benzoin, 1/4 oz storax, 2 oz angelica root, 1 oz annis seed bruised, 1/2 oz freshly dried lavendar leaves, 2 nut-megs grated, 3 tonquin beans (whole), 6 grains fresh musk, sandalwood, (as much as you like), orange & lemon peel and such freshly dried flowers as violets, pinks or other lightly scented flowers should be added each year in season. Shake and stir jar occassionally, [sic], but leave open only durring, [sic], the oderizing of room. Mrs Sherrerd June 11, 1896.
