Monday nite 7: p.m.

Dear Daddy:

Mother has just been talking to Helen. Helen said she wanted us there for Christmas dinner, [[inserted above]: in Eve]], & mother said she wanted them here & that she had asked Uncle Fred out. Suppose no matter where we eat, we'll have to go down & see Virginia & her [eyes?] [[inserted above]: Xmas morning]]. I was down at Helen's for awhile last eve. Virginia always wants in my purse, so I took out a green "hanky" & something else; then later my comb. They gave her my gloves, one at a time, then she could not hurt or would hurt her. Still, she wasn't satisfied, not even with a pencil & paper. So I opened my purse & she sure had a grand & glorious time.

Did mama tell you that Gae was home for about half an hour last Thursday nite? Helen & Roy, Rachel & Floyd were out for a ride. Rachel said, lets go see Gae. "Where do we turn?" Helen said "right here." I think they were on Foothill Blvd then. Gae was on the outside Balcony, the one that has big flower roots around it. They coaxed for a little while. Then she saw John Goby on the Blvd. & Roy said it didn't take her.

[[inserted left margin]: I rented a house across to some nice old Iowa folks. Chickens are laying pretty good. Sick hen still living which just makes me about sick. Got 6 lb pkgs from Cleveland yesterday. Weather is wonderful. Write soon & often. Love Ma.]]

very long then to decide. I called up Helen about 7:00 to see if she was going to the community chorus & [[struck text]: concert was c]] concert at the high school & was coming up after us. It was then she informed us Gae was in this neck of the woods. About 8:00 o'clock, they arrived here & John about 1/2 hour later to take Gae back to school. I don't know when she called him up. After G & J had gone, Roy & Helen dropped mother off at the concert & in time for the offering & then walked home.

The new offices for C.E. are - Pres. Carl Joslin - V. Pres. Miriam Shively - Lec Elen Shively - Treas. H. May, a new kid.

Scotty was up for Treasurer & if he had been elected, it would have been quite a family affair. I asked Miriam if she thot, [thought], she could handle the boys. Last time, there was only one, Roy, [[inserted above]: on the executive]]. We got 2 packages today from Cleveland. One was a picture of Gorge, the baby, [[inserted above]: 21 years old]], & the other a quilt or something. One corner, [[inserted above]: of box]], was broken open so ma (& I) peeked. The pictures came this a.m. & so we undid it. Mother just called. Lindshand & he said we could get them, [[inserted above]: auto licenses]], thru him. He sends to L.A. I told told her to ask him if he changed anything & she didn't. Well, guess that's all the news for now. Haven't heard from Gae since last Thursday nite.

With love, Alice

[[inserted left margin]: P.S. Ma wants to know if you are braiding yourself or eat at Ellies?]]

Dearest Daddy:

I just got home from M.E. Church. They had as their special guests the Hi X boys and their leaders and one of them is the fat Mr. Slick.

When I got home here, found Alice out talking to Andy and his girl, Miss Scott. They'd brot,[brought], Alice home from Arcadia Ch. (church) Andy says tell Daddy he sends his love to you. He didn't know until Alice told him that you were away.

I wrote the Jacksons 8 pages this eve & mailed at Bakers Corner. I told all about you and what good letters you wrote and I'd ask you to write them soon as I get their correct address.

Alice has been to Ch. and R School and C.E. Biz meeting at 3. C.E. this eve. & Ch. again this eve. I think that's plenty for one day, don't you?

Did you go to church as Ma told you too [to]?

[[inserted left margin]: A Mr. Simpson called up. Wanted you to sharpen a saw for him. Said you'd done work for him.]]

I met Mr. Phipps recently on St. and, of course, the first thing, as usual, he inquired for you and was surprised when I told where you were, and sent his love or something to you and said "tell him I don't like him slipping away like that without saying anyabout it," etc.

Tues. a.m.

Howdy: Just got chickens fed and, after I write a little, must go out and water yard, squirt off poarch [porch] & side-walk and water the back.

Expect my auxillary lodge women here tonite and that means extra work tidying up a bit and I've got so much to do. I don't know whether I'm a foot or horseback. Police got Lewie and Gill and another boy who has been staying there for last 10 days or more for breaking a lock and stealing 2 automobiles. Paper didn't give their names, but they are missing and I know it's them. They were to be taken to Juvenile Hall L.A. yesterday so I hope they will be punished good & proper.

Are you cooking any of your own meals yet? If not, why not your breakfast? I don't want you getting any thinner. Linstrand Emil says he don't charge for sending licences & he will get 'em in L.A. and of course, we would get receipt in that way.
