Description

Old meaning: A disease which consists in a permanent contraction of all the muscles, or merely some, without relaxation, characterized by closure of the jaws, difficulty swallowing, rigidity and immobility of the limbs and trunk. Modern meaning: An infection caused by the soil bacterium Clostridium tetani, where the bacteria release a toxin that causes painful muscle contractions. Usually the bacteria enter the body through a soil-contaminated wound. Aka lockjaw.
