Typhus fever

Old meaning: A continuous fever characterized by a weak and rapid pulse, extreme weakness, much "cerebral disturbance", and generally lasting 2 to 3 weeks or longer. Sometimes called "typhus gravior" to distinguish it from typhoid fever called "typhus mitior". Modern meaning: Typhus fevers are caused by specific types of bacteria. Epidemic typhus (camp fever, jail fever) is due to Rickettsia prowazekii spread by body lice, scrub typhus is due to Orientia tsutsugamushi spread by chiggers, and murine typhus is due to Rickettsia typhi spread by fleas.
