Sept. 13. Sophora tinctoria Indego [Indigo] weed — There is no doubt of its being ye S. tinctoria.

The carina is divided at ye base, but entire 2/3 of its length up to ye apex. (more properly) is divided one third of ye length from ye base. The other part entire. The filaments are perfectly distinct — within ye carina. Apices bent upward. Anthera subrotunda. of ye usual size. The other char. accord well —

100) legumen is enlarged in ye middle into an oblong, compressed form, raised by ye base of ye legumen above ye Calex, wh is persistance The upper part of ye legumen also remains with ye being enlarged — so that yn is a consid= =erable portions of ye Leguman above & below, wh never alter except that it becomes hard. The swelled part is very much enlarged — & has ye appearance of an Oblong, compressed Legum support on a stem, rising from ye bottom of ye calix, with a spine at ye apex. Bloss. Yellow —

Spec. char. very accurate in Sp. Plant. In Veget. ye addito. of Stipul. minutis. (Mant. 77.) does not appear on these Specn. But it is now very late in ye Season. The proper time of Blooming July & Aug.?

Sept. 14 Rattan? N.Sp. Caparia gratialoides? lanceolata Vid Murrays Veg. from [Sup.?] — Digitalis purpura or Fox Glove. N. Sp. linearis

The Gen. Chr. accord well — but ye anthera being cordate — ye Stigma cordate, & ye Dissepiment, placed ye contrary way. are plain & conclusive proof of that it is a Caparia. Such they evidently are in a good Specn. wh I have now carefully examined —

In doubt whether it be ye — lanceolata. for ye leaves are clearly linear in all ye Specn. Nor does ye stem terminate in a corymbus for ye blossoms are alternate & also opposite — In

102) In some all plants — ye branches rise from ye axilla of ye leaves. opposite Some only on one side, or from one leaf, others opposite or one from both leaves. Towards ye top ye fruit stalks rise from ye axilla of ye leaves — both in branches & main stem. Some times from only a single blossom.

Grows from 12 to 18 inches high, much branched, Leaves very long, linear, keeled on ye under sides. Capsules globular. one half continued in ye calix, wh is perminent & adheres closely to ye Capusle. Blossom large Red. —

Capraria linearis — vel linearis folia — folliis oppositis, linearibus, carinatis, pilosis; pedunclis — pilosis, sessilibus; pedunculis solilariis, folio valii breviori= =bus, alternis vel opositis.

103) [1]798 June 13 4.C. 1 ord Cornus Sanguinea Gen. perfect — It agrees with Sp. pl. perfectly — & with M. Vig. — but it also has some of Murray's Chr. of ye Sericia. The old bark — or ye lower pt. of ye shrub —is some wt. Reddish from many reddish spots in a kind of warts — ye young shoots pail green — approach ing to an ash colour.

The leaves are a deep green on upper side — almost White on ye under side — thick set with short white hairs, shinning — & rather soft — byt does not seem to be properly silky. By road near Bill Dodges — Cap. Bar. D. land.

Leaves not perfectly uni= =form — in ye form — nearly & mostly oblong-ovato.

Colour of Berries uncertain
