Dear Dr. Van Waters,

I have you letter of October 7. Thanks or answering my questions.
I am so glad my ship arrived on your birthday. How could I forget you?

Your cook has redeeming qualities, apparently. Your three cakes make
her case more favorable. I am sure she would be a more loyal friend than the other
one, who married twelve different men in a few days time.

I am sorry about the damage caused by the hurricane, but, at the smae time,
thankful that you were not injured.

I appreciated your telling me how you first became interested in me.
You have done so very much for me; Doctor; I do not know how I can ever even things up.
Once out of here, I shall do my best to please you in every possible way.

Another of your good works bore fruit last Saturday: Miss Rice came to see
me. I expected an older person, but she seemed gardly more than a girl. This was
one of the most enjoyed visits I have ever had. She spoke of the hurricane, your
institution, comparingn it with what she had seen of this one. She told me a few
things about herself, her school work, her likes and dislikes on other subjects, and her
lack of friends in a strange city. She spoke very highy of you and your ideals;
best of all, she may visit me agian, provided our warden will permit it. I
think she is a swell person; I hope she will come again. I enjoyed her visit very much.
I certainly appreciate your bringing it about, Doctor; all of my thanks are due you.

I passed my English examination Wednesday and received a final average
grade of 87%. As I no longer expected anything from Columbia, I permitted myself
to be talked into another course - Composition and Rhetoric by Tanner, which
should teach me to write you better letters. Some good should come of it then.
