Dear Friend,

Your very kind note containing a "token of appreciation" was very much appreciated. I accept it with thanks, but I find by far the greater pleasure in contemplating, the kind feelings which it expresses. If my pastoral ministrations & personal sympathies have been any comfort to you & yours in your great trial the very knowledge of the fact rewards me above my deserts. Allow me to say that my sense of sympathy is all the deeper because I feel that I have sustained a personal loss, a loss of that ever ready & tactful sympathy which

is so refreshing to a pastor's heart. Your lamented mother was one among the few who seemed to realize fully the burden of anxiety & responsibility resting upon a pastor's heart. In her removal our church has suffered a serious diminution of its spiritual power. May our heavenly Father, draw very near to all of you whose hearts lie bruised & bleeding at his feet, & may he bless & sanctify you is the earnest prayer, of your pastor. In cordial Christian love
