Newbern Nov 19th 1895

My dear Eliza, I was much surprised to receive a paper from you last week giving an account of your dear Mothers death. You will accept my [dear?] love and sympathy in this your great sorrow. I wish when you can you would send a few lines to your mothers old friend giving all particulars. I sent the paper to Gertrude knowing she remembers you all so well. old "Tree house" corner of Pollock & Hancock Street. You remember the house - Dr [Hughes?] sold the lot we were living on & we then sold the house last June & we have been living in rented houses since. First on Metcalf Street & now here. The house is not very comfortable [most?] too old & out of repair. Horace Eva & her son just twenty one make our family. Mary lives on East Front. They lost their oldest son just twenty one last winter, a very great trial to us all. He was named Hary Baker [Brock?] for Elisa's husband Harry Baker. my dear I suppose you are the only one of the family living in N.C. I thought the account

of your mother in the paper was comforting [indeed?] I was always sorry I did not see more of you when you visited Newbern several years since. Sallie Duguid is living very near us & I see her quite often. Her oldest son Dr [Joe?] Duguid is married. She has two son's beside, one at school. Newbern has changed so much since you were a child living here that it would not look natural. I hope you will try & send me a few lines. We look for Gertrude some after Christmas you know her home is 'in' New Bedford & has been since my sister Gulielmas death a few years since. Your friend with dear love [?]. T. Baxter
