San Diego, Cal. Friday, Jan 1, 1943

Dear Eva;

Well this is the first day of the new year so I will start it off right by writing you a letter. I didn't do any celebrating last night but one of the instuctors that sleeps in the same tent with me did. He came in this morning about four o'clock with too much to drink and lit all the oil stove's and turned the flame too high, when the rest of us woke about six thirty we looked like the players in a minstrel show. All the clothes we had hanging up and everything else in the tent was covered in about two inches of soot.

I received Mr. Neely's present today it certainly was nice, be sure and call them and thank them for me. I also got a nice pencil from Beaulah and

her husband and also a card. Well I finally got that other stripe, it's corporal now. Nice way to start the new year isn't it?

I guess I will be stuck here for the duration unless I can find some way to get out of it. How is Judy getting along, still as cute as ever? Well I guess that's about all there is to write about so I will close, Regards to everyone.
