Dear Eva

Well I didn't get a furlough although I tried through the red cross. There is some talk going around that the whole outfit will get furloughs soon, maybe that is the reason mine was turned down. I haven't heard from Henry yet. I wrote him a letter in care of the address you gave me. I haven't received the money you sent, or did you send it? If you did I will wire it back, I didn't have quite enough as I was figuring on catching a plane if I could. If I have to catch a train it will take me most of the leave traveling back and forth. The most time I can get if I do get a furlough would be fifteen days.

I have been training pretty hard the last month, but I like it. I don't know when this outfit plans to go overseas but the way things are developing it doesn't look as though it

will be too long. We have been taking Island after Island from the Japs so it looks as though this division may get to hit the Phillipines or China. I am pretty sure we will all get furloughs before we shove off.

Eva tell Harry that I was sitting in the recreation room last night listening to the radio and the Lone Ranger program came on. The fellow sitting next to me mentioned something about Merita bread, I asked him where he was from and he told me he was from Burlington N.C. I told him that Harry used to work for Merita, and he said he knew him and used to ride with him once in a while, he said that Harry didn't know him, but he knew [Owen?] Isley whom he used to pal with. Small world isn't it?

Well Eva I hope everything is alright with you and Harry and Judy. I would like to see you all, maybe I will before long. Anyway don't worry, I hear the war will be over soon as the Marines are going to loan the army ten Marines so they can beat Germany in a hurry. Well Eva I have to close for now. Write soon

Love Jewell
