[Stationary border: BETWEEN THESE LINES ACROSS THE SEA I SEND MY THOUGHTS TO GREET YOU IF I COULD GO ALONG I'D STAMP AND MAIL ME TOO TO MEET YOU]

January 21, 1945

Dear Eva

I have received several letters from you in the last few days, so while I have some time off I will drop you a few lines. I have just finished reading your last letter and I am glad that things are going so well at home, I think it is about time for Harry to get a break, I remember when I worked a couple of Saturdays with him he really put out. I am also glad to hear that Henry is getting along good, I like his wife too and I think he picked a smart woman for a wife. In my opinion he deserves the best, not many men at his age have fought for their country voluntarily. As for myself I am well and healthy, life is getting quite monotonous for us, as usual all we talk of is when the war is over and going back. We no sooner got over here than we

started talking of going back. I only hope that all of us get back but I know that some of us will pay the hard way. I have run into quite a few old friends of mine since I have arrived over here, some them I haven't seen in three or four years, guys I went through training with. There isn't many marines left back in the states, about everyone who is able to carry a rifle has been sent over.

I have started receiving copies of the "Enterprise" pretty regularly, I also received the pictures you sent, I liked them a lot. The watch that I sent is broken but not very bad so if you get a chance you can get it repaired and use it. Eva, don't worry if you don't hear from me very often, as I have told you before there are times when I don't get a chance to write. The war is slowly but surely coming to an end, but there is still a long hard road to travel before it is over. Like all the rest I am looking forward to when I can return for good. Write every chance you get as every letter is appreciated.

Love to all Jewell

Sgt J.H. Spears
