Sgt J.H. Spears (Sender's name) Co "B" 1st Bn 27th Regt. (Sender's address) 5th Marine Division c/o F.P.O. San Francisco Feb. 25th 1945 (Date)

Dear Eva, Well, as you have probably read from the papers, I am at a former Jap Island, called Iwo Jima, about six hundred miles from Japan. At the present time the Japs and us are having quite an argument as to who should stay here, one of us has to leave and I don't think it will be The Marines. I landed here Feb. the 19th in the first wave of troops to hit the beach. There was no one there to greet us but Japs, but they gave us a rousing reception. I am well and unhurt and hope to stay that way. I have had pretty good hunting so far and the season is still open. I bummed this paper from some guy back behind the lines, so this will have to be a letter to the whole family so how's about passing the word that I am okay and will write to everyone when the battle is over. Tell Father to say a prayer for me as I need it now more than ever before. Love to all from "The Best Foxhole Digger this Side of the States." Sgt. J.H. Spears Jewell
