of that far-away summer. But the mothers and
sisters wore more modest attire, and as
their great great grandmothers had done
before them their glossy feathers were
smooth as satin but they were content with
less gorgeous colors, soft browns and, and
browns that showed gleams of green and
gold- and their voices were "low and
sweet, and I wish my dear little girl
with her golden brown hair and her
pansy eyes, had been sitting under
the sunflowers to look and listen.
Not a bird of them all would have
stopped singing through fear, I am
sure. And their song would be "sweet
sweet sunflower seeds are good to
eat" But my dear little girl is sleep-
ing on her pillow I know for it is
nine oclock so goodnight my
darling - and kiss little Dorothy
on both cheeks and both lips and
on every one of her ten fingers and
toes for me - and I wish I
could give you as many
