Cordelia Davis letter to Celestia Colby 19 Apr 1891

Dear Sister Lettie I expect you think I surely get a letter from Cordelia by Tuesday.

I am afraid it will be short if I do, though I meant to have got at it but I have written to his brother and Cirlissia and ought to to Brad as I ought to owe him one now Eva took Carrie out riding the first time they have planned to go in a few days and everytime it would rain and be worse instead of better It is very rough but she call at Sternnaks with her found her better and then took her up to Ben Shephard and left her while she drove down to Evas We had a line from her the week before with a

2 Calla Lilly and a baked sirloin for me," she said She was just about withered and did not seem to much strenght for the extra work; her sister had been and was still very sick. They sent for her out beyond Elgin she stayed three days but she said it seemed she could not leave her and with insufficient help but she said it had to be done" she had heard since she was slowly improving but not able to sit up Eva said Paul had not been out doors for a week till yesterday. I said they found Hannah better she had been real sick Mrs. Harvey staid with her a part of a day and then Ed, her boy, was taken sick and she could not leave they sent for John he came though he would try to get

somebody to help went up to see if Mrs Potter or Nellie could not sit with her till he got back found Mrs. Potter under the doctor care, and so it goes Eva told her if she had let her know she would have come and stay a while in the daytime or all night but she said she knew how it was, but they are all better in this neighborhood now and as usual wishing for settled weather some have sowed a few oats and it has rained so much they have not got them more than half dragged. everybody is wishing it would be clear long enough to let them get in their grain Our folk have got in their early potoatoes and earliest vegetables such as peas Lettuce Radishes parsnips salsify a a few onions but I doubt whether

4 many have got any in Monday after noon. It rained half the night after the pleasant day was raining when we got up but Eva had gather wash water on and so washed and the sun came out and she put her clothes out and dried them but it is raining again. The face of the country has changed within a week as the rain has been warmer The yard has on a beautiful green carpet. The round beds out in front have lots of hepaticas in bloom and other wild things coming up the crocuses on the long bed are in bloom and the other will soon be coming on

The boys went to the woods yesterday and brought home some early flowers for boquets Eva has had her [full?] shading south of the house

5 I like to see fresh clover [?] I believe she is going to put out her Chrisanthemum soon she has had sweet peas out a week I think they msut begin to show them selves soon I dont know but I told you [Jophen?] had cut down all the willows out and cut it up into wood. It made a big pile of it but it keeps one put wood into the stove half the time. He has piled the brush on the stump and is going to burn them out root and branch I suppose. We got a can of syrup and then half brick of very nice sugar some small cakes for the children and two or three quarts of hicktory nuts and a tea cup full of beachnuts Got a line from Ida that they were on their way it took a fortnight but
