Plan of Belfield

LAY-OUT PLAN prepared in 1955 by the Architectual Advisory Board of the College (Prorfessor Robert Matthew, Edinburgh, Chairman; Joseph V. Downes, B. Arch., LL.D., Professor of Architecture 1942-51; Professor Desmond Fitzgerald, Professor of Architecture sine 1951.) On this, the Belgrove Lay-out, see pp. 12-13 above and Appendiz IV to the Commission's Report. It is tentative adn awaits further Consideration.

The blocks shown are not the actual ground plans of buildings, but are purely diagrammatic. They have been drawn about 20% larger than what is required byy the present schedules of accommodation, in order to show that there is ample space for developments which may lie many years ahead.

The space within the ring-road is 36 1/2 acres, or nearly three thimes the area of the present site at Earlsfort Terrace plus the Iveagh Gardens. The longest distancce between the buidlings is about one third of a mile.

The isolated house at the left is Merville; here marked Staff, it has in fact been converted for the purposes of Research Biochemistry and Pharmacology. Next to the right is Belfield House; the other existing houses are not marked. As we come to the ring-road, the blocks on the left (Arts, etc.) are in Fields. Part of the open space between is the grounds of Belfgrove.

The indications Hostels in various parts of the plan are tentative. The large building on the right marked Clinic represents a project of 1955 which is not longer contemplated.
