Chester field county [va.?] June the 4 1862

Der mis i now seat my self to inform you of my helth this leavs me well and i hope when thes fue lines come to hand tha may find you ingoying the same kind blessing i receive yo kind letter ond the 3 day of the presant month and it stated that you all was well i was glad to her from you and to muse to rite to you at presant we are betean petersburg and richmond about 2 mile from the railrode on the turnpike the yankees come up the gemes river in site of ours forts about a mile from us and ours regmet went down thare in site to meat them if tha come to land to fight them but tha did {note} come up and i havent herd from them sense i herd that the 53 and 12 regments was in a fight last Sunday and that thre was 30 kiled in the 12 regment and 20 in the 53 regment i allsoe herd that 2 of our regment got one regment of the yankes in a hole of water about wast deep and tha shot them donn tell tha could walk across the hole of water and note get wet tha sed tha kiled them all but [illegible] sixth tha sed thre was a greate lose on both sids but i dont no whether enny of it is so or not the fight was a bout richmond thre somewhre
